Question about 'Change the icon for Internet Shortcuts'

I tried the above suggestion on going into the registry and making your suggested settings and it still does not work? Surely someone has a sure-fire way to fix this problem ? It's be 3 years since XP has been out ? I'm open to any suggestions to try and change a IE shortcut icon from the default "big blue E " like IE does now. All my shortcuts are a blue E !

Have you tried making a different browser your "default" browser? That should free the icons from system control and let you change them with the normal context menu options. Remember-IE is a System process.

You can try creating shortcuts to a web document, which will open in IE. Open a page and File - Send - Desktop. Change the icon in the properties.

You could download Folder Marker from
www.foldermarker.com
I've changed my Internet Explorer icon on my desktop to a very nice chrome looking
one, this program also lets you change from the usual yellow folders to a variety
of colours, make all your folders look how you want them too.
Neat program.

When I do that and click-properties-change icon-then pick one and click -ok-apply-it never changes as it stays the dreaded blue E ?

Do you mean like Mozilla ? I've used it some but still like IE7. What do you mean by free icons from system control ? And How ? Jerry

The folder tweaker suggestions above are fun and give you lots of options. Since IE is an extension of Windows Explorer, when it makes an icon, that icon "belongs" to Windows-not you. Just like system files and folders belong to Windows, and you cannot modify them. If you open Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel, you will notice a panel at the left that is marked "Set Program Access and Defaults." When that opens choose "Custom," and click the little down arrows on the right to see your choices. Here you can change anything you like, and when finished just click OK. Changing your default browser won't stop you from using IE, but it may allow you to change the icons. Remember, you're hearing from a guy that only uses Opera, so take this with a grain of salt. I never have cared for Firefox but have left IE forever. I love Opera!
