CPU usage 100% but no apparent reason

problem: intermittent and random lagging graphics and distorted sound (lets call
it LD to shorten this post) happens when playing the game maplestory. when Alt+Tab
to minimize the game, LD occassionly happens as well, though lesser frequency, but
especially with windows media player running

however i have never exactly seen maplestory use 100% on task manager, as when it
gets LD, i am in-game and upon Alt+Tab, all the proccesses show normal usage, the
graph jumps back to ~10% but there is a trail of 100% prior to the Alt+Tab.

the reason this is baffeling is because::

A) this is going on on TWO different computers (mine and my boyfriend's comp)

my comp:
p4, 3.2ghz, 1.0gb RAM, winfast PX6600 GT 128mb, windows XP SP1

boyfriend's comp:
p4, 3.0ghz, 512mb RAM, raedon X330/X550 128mb, windows XP SP2 with latest updates

both comps processes running when problem occurs are maplestory, avg antivirus, zonealarm,
msn messenger, ~3-4 IE explorer web browsers, windows explorer, winamp*, windows
media player**

*winamp is not always on; i do not run that program and it still happens
**WMP is not always on. but if it is, it isnt running concurrently; the video is
paused when i return to maplestory. conversely, when maplestory is runing in the
background and i am watching a video, the video clips shows LD intermittently/randomly
as well

B) my boyfriend's comp was recently formatted to install windows XP SP2

C) all of the processes mentioned above are not new. in fact, previous to recent
LD occuring, i had could be running more stuff eg. 6 web browsers or other added
programs running with no LD. there were no changes to the hardware either.

D) i have run ad-aware, avg scan bothwith most updated versions and did not pick
up anything for both comps

therefore it seems to me i can rule out:
A) hardware problems since 2 different specs computers are getting it

B) any virus or trojan, since scans show nothing, even though it was only 2 programs,
one of the comp recently was formatted, i really doubt there is a virus

C) graphics/sound card hardware/driver problems as both comp have the latest drivers
for graphics while sound cards are on-board. the problem is not with graphics or
sound anyway since it feels more like i was using 128mb RAM - very slow computer,
rather then graphics or sound problem alone.

i am inclined to think its the game maplestory, but i do not understand why. it
is a relatively simple 2D graphics mmporpg, i have been playing this game long before
LD started. therefore i seriously think it isnt the game. moreover if it was the
one eating up the memory, wouldnt it be eating memory even if i Alt+Tab out of the
game? i have not tested with any other game yet, please advise though if its good
to do so

im really stumped!! i hope i havent been long-winded; i wanted to include all my
suspicions and hope someone helps me cuz though its not detrimental to comp usage
but it is irritating enough

thanks in advance for reading and helping!!

Wow that is a problem.. but first I think its safe to say that when you are in any type of heavy graphics game you will see usage jump way up... second thing that grabbed me was the fact that you have not loaded service pack 2... you really need that and the some odd 30 updates since then.. and load all the updates available not just the criticle updates.. but the optional updates as well... just stay away from driver updates offered for your hardware by microsoft and after all that you should go to the site for your graphics card and see if they have an update.

hi it doesnt seem that maplestory is a graphic intense game! its a 2D online game!!

and yes regarding the service pack 1, well its a different thing anyway, cus my copy
is not so legal, so i shall not go down that road since it is a different matter
altogether

thanks..anyone else offer ideas?
