How can I prevent eliminate or disable those "a new version of msn messenger" popups / notifications? I hate them. Is there some registry thing I can do to forever get rid of them?

As long as you use msn messenger you will get the popups, but you can remove the service if you don't use it. Several Versions of it. One in Add/Remove Programs if installed, one built into XP. Google Disable Windows Messenger for info to remove the built in version.
