partitioning with xp

I want to partition my hard drive. I followed instructions using disc management
and came across the following instruction.
To create a new partition, right-click unallocated space on the basic disk where
you want to create the partition, and then click New Partition.
Where do I find the unallocated space to right click?
I am using XP SP2 HP laptop model compaq nx 7400 80 gig drive.
I am grateful for any suggestions.

If you have only One Partition already you can't use XP Disk Management to Partition.
If you have a Second Partition without Windows on it. You could delete the Partition,
and create a couple Partitions from the unallocted space that is created when the
Partition was Deleted.

Thanks Steve. I do only have the C partition and the HP restore sector so ovbiously
XP won't work. I am planning to try Partition Magic unless you - or anyone else -
has any other suggestions. Many thanks for your help.

Backup before you try Partition Magic. I used Partition Magic on my Brand new Laptop,
and it trashed the Drive. At least I got to try my Laptops System Restore DVD, and
30 minutes later windows was reinstalled, but I left it with just one partition at
that point.:)

There is a free program called Partition Logic which does the same thing Partition
Magic does. Don't know how good it is as I have no personal experience with it.
After reading many posts on this forum where Partition Magic trashed the hard
drive, I would recommend that you invest in a 2nd hard drive. Then you will have
lots of space. If you don't want to do that, my 2nd choice would be to save personal
data, do a Clean Install of XP, deleting the existing partition and creating 2 new
ones then install to the first one. restore your data then format the 2nd for use
as a data partition.

Rich is giving you a good advice. Two drives is the best I have 3,you have 2 machines
in one.And you can have a few more partitions.More the merrier. And with 2nd. HD lost
data what is that?Thing of the past.About Partition Logic
I tried it last year didn't like it but that could be because I have PM 7 and to
this day never had and accident.Must be 4 or 5 years now.Not for NTFS, and PM 8 is
not 100% reliable in NTFS.

Think VERY carefully about why you want an extra partition and the reasons for it.
partitioning and perhaps re-installing XP on a Laptop can be/will be fraught with
danger unless you have ALL the proprietary drivers and CDs that a Laptop requires.
An external Hard Drive may be by far the easiest solution for you.

when you can have to HHD......you think it is out of the question to try to make
a C with programs files and Windows and a D with personal data ? ( I have tried
with Partition Magic 8 , and maybe because I do not know the program well I did
not suceded.........instructions to make a partion of the only parttion C with partition
magic or any other program ? ?? Thank you in advance ....Julio

Have you backed up your data before you started doing this? If not, your exposing
yourself to complete loss of all data. If it's a new system then this may not matter.
Using Partiton Magic, you first have to shrink the existing partition size. Then
you create a new partition in the now available, unused space. Once you have all
the steps selected you start it and it does each one in turn.
Cross fingers, eyes, legs and hold you breath, a small prayer would not be out
of the question either :-) and hope that it completes successfully. Dont' touch the
computer till it finishes.

Hello Rich , thank you for your prompt answer . I did not back up any data because
it is a brand new laptop ......with only one partition .....C = 60 GB. I wanted
to have a D for my data , but something went wrong. Do you know any link to tutorials
Partition Magic that tackle this specific situation ?
I promise I will cross all I have waiting for a happy end ....
But the annoying XMNT 2002 ......how can I get ryd of it ?
Thank you again Julio

Only what is available from the Symantec site. What kind of problem did you have?
It does not work at all if there are hard drive problems of any kind, just gives
up with a useless error message at best and a trashed drive at worst. Most of the
failures I encounterd were at the end of the process after it had completed a lot
of the tasks.
