Cpu 100% System Idle 99%??

Hi guys,

My CPU usage is sitting at between 84 & 100% on my XP Pro box but it does not change
nor does the usage history graph show any movement at all. But the processes shows
that my idle is 99% and my computer seems to be running ok.
I read that it could be my graphics card so I re-installed the graphics card driver,
cleaned the registry and scanned for virus's and it's still the same.

Just wondering if anyone has come across and resolved this issue before as any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Phil

Weird. I'm guessing that it's just some kind of weird bug - esp since system idle says 99% which is normal. I might try getting some cpu benchmark program to see if it's benchmarking a lot slower that what it should be. That should tell you which one to pay attention too. I don't know any off the top of my head, a little googling would do the trick though

Thanks for the input kroan.

It is strange especially when it's the same in safe mode. Will I ever find out?
Doubt it.

Try ProcessExplorer from SysInternals, might help figure out what is going on.

Go to Windows XP Task Manager.. See what is using up all the resources. (Look under 'processes') If it is 'System Idle Process' at the bottom of the list, that is NORMAL.. It isn't really taking up all the resources. Look at the performance window, and your CPU useage, and Page File useage should be quite normal. That is a deceiving reading, but again, normal on XP. It is not really 'using' all the resources. When all windows are closed, your CPU useage may be from 0 to 2%.. All is O.K. (If that is what you were talking about.)

I think he meant that the cpu graph in the task manager said it was at 80-100% but system idle reported it was taking 99 so the graph should be at 0 or 1. Could be wrong though

Your 100% correct kroan. The system is running fine just the graph reporting wrong
information.
Thinking about a fresh install anyway.
