using Dell laptop and windows xp. But the startup is very slow. It was working fine, but I had to format the hard drive and reinstall the xp several times. Now before showing the xp logo, it shows a horizontal dotted bar for several minutes during the startup. Altogrther, it takes around 4 minutes to startup. Once started up, it works OK

It's possible that there is a conflict with the programs being loaded. If you uncheck
all the programs and then add them them one at a time you might be able to isolate
the programs that is causing the problem.
Click Start, Run, type msconfig, click OK. In the new window click Startup tab, Disable
All button, OK. You need to reboot.
If there is a noticeable improvement in boot time then it is definitely one of the
startup programs. If that is the case, go back to startup and check one of the programs
and reboot and so on. When the lag appears then you have identified the program that
is causing the problem.
By the way, make sure that you are off line when you do this as your firewall and
anti-virus program are part of the startup programs.
