Copying files is very slow

I hope someone out there knows what is causing this problem.
When I try to copy a file or folder, either to another folder on the same drive or,
to or from my external drive, it takes forever and if I try to cancel the copying
my computer locks up and I have to reboot.
This is driving me mad, i've defragged all the drives, done all my clean up programs
i.e anti-virus (no viruses), Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Terminator, AdAware
SE Personal, Windows Advanced Care etc. etc. my computer is clean of spyware, malware,
trojans etc.
This problem has been happening for about a month now, i've tried a system restore,
that didn't help...
Can someone please help before I take the drastic action to reformat and reinstall
XP Home.

Defragging could not have made a significant improvement. You should first look to
see if your controller has fallen back to one of the PIO modes rather than DMA. Open
the device manager and look at the primary ide channel properties.

Checked Primary IDE Properties, 2 listed:

1st one
Device Type = Greyed out Auto Detection
Transfer Mode = DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode = Ultra DMA Mode 6
Device Usage = Greyed out Blank

2nd one
Device Type = Auto Detection
Transfer Mode = DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode = Not applicable
Device Usage = Use this device (enabled)

So it's not that. Check your cpu usage during the copy process.

Ok, after 2 reboots finally managed to get it to show, before trying to copy:

CPU Usage shows between 2 & 7%

when copying from external drive to C drive "My Documents":

CPU Usage shows 29%

Copying says its going to take 170 mins, but, animation pauses regularly, time doesn't
go down, I click cancel and pc locks up, have to reboot...

You might have a corrupt file in the My Documents folder. Try copying an individual,
a selection of files, etc. Look for a trend.
