Compressed files

This isn't specifically an XP issue, so I apologise in advance. I run Windows Live OneCare occasionally and it asks whether I wish to compress "old" files. When accessing these files, is there a significant overhead? My specs are: Pentium 1.7MHz, 528Mb RAM and around 60Gb HDD across two physical drives, (NTFS), with around 50% free.

Never used Windows Live OneCare, but I would personally just ignore the compress files option.
