Desktop file icons that just won't go away

I'm very anal retentive and insist that my desktop is clear of clutter and unwanted
junk. That being said I have three objects on the desktop that seem impossible to
remove. They seem to have randomly generated names, no extensions, and the properties
list them simply as "files". I get the feeling that they may have been generated
by the AdobeCleanup process that runs with Acrobat 8, but that's just a guess. In
order to save some time I'll list what I've tried to do so far:
Simply Delete them - "Cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or disk"
Rename them - "Cannot rename file. Cannot read from the source file or disk"
Restart in Safe-mode - Same problems
Killbox - "File Error - File does not seem to exist"
Move them somewhere else on the damn computer so I don't have to look at them - They
won't move.
I think that's everything I've tried. I recently reformatted and would really prefer
not to have to do it again, but I'm obsessive enough that if I can't get rid of them
I would probably do that.
Any help? Anyone?
BTW - I'm running XP Pro with SP2 installed. Thanx

crowebar, if killbox doesn't work, you could try moveonboot Usually
works for me and its free
Failing that, what are these files called, what are their properties

Lets see if this shows them......
Copy this into the "Run Box" (Start > Run) and hit OK, it will produce a text file
called output.txt in C:\ - search for it - then copy and paste it back here
regedit /e c:\output.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop"

Thanks for the quick reply folks.
Gil - I appreciate the recommendation and I will check out the program and post my
results.
Mr.Charlie - Below is the results of the Output text. Oddly I don't even see the
files in the text - but I'm not nuts (well, maybe a little...) but they're there.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{1f4de370-d627-11d1-ba4f-00a0c91eedba}]
@="Computer Search Results Folder"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}]
@=""
"Removal Message"="@mydocs.dll,-900"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{e17d4fc0-5564-11d1-83f2-00a0c90dc849}]
@="Search Results Folder"
Again as far as the properties go, they are listed as just "FIile" with no recommended
program to open them and 0 bytes in size. They're like ghosts. Creepy...

If you really want a clean looking desktop, just right click on the desktop, select
Arrange Icons by..., then remove the checkmark by Show Desktop Items.
As an aside, if you were using FAT32 rather than NTFS, getting rid of those files
would be easy.

lol ricer - I like it clean ,but that might be a little too clean. Seriously though,
I've never really known the pros and cons between the FAT32 and NTFS filing systems.
But I'm pretty sure I'm not ready to convert everything back to FAT32 - This comp.
is on a network where all the other machines run NTFS and I'm sure such a move would
cause other problems.

Making the move back to FAT32 is certainly not trivial, however the file system on
other computers on the network is irrelevant. In fact you can have both FAT32 and
NTFS on the same computer -- I do. NTFS has some advantages in a workplace environment,
since it has decent security whereas FAT32 offers no security from the prying eyes
of others using that computer. But most home users do not need the extra security
of NTFS and that extra security causes a multitude of inconveniences such as the
one you are experiencing. The only real advantage that NTFS has over FAT32 is the
security and its ability to handle files greater than 4GB. The 4GB limit is why I
have some NTFS partitions. There is a standard claim that NTFS provides better performance
for larger partitions, and that might be true. But there is no good reason to make
your system partition bigger than about 15 - 20GB, and FAT32 performs better for
smaller partitions. But best of all, it's a lot less trouble.
