How to change pointers

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.
I went into Start>Settings>Control Panel and clicked on Mouse. That brought up a
dialog box called Mouse Properties. I clicked on the tab called Pointers. Then I
was presented with a list of different pointers. I selected one. I would have assumed
this would light up the Apply button but it didn't.
Can somebody please tell me how to change my pointer to one of those in the list?
Do I have to use the browse button every time?
I wanted to try having a black pointer but there were none in the list. So I hit
the Browse button and this brought up a list of pointer files. There were several
black pointers and I thought I had what I wanted but I didn't. Any of those pointers
I picked changed colors depending on where they were.
Can somebody please tell me how I can get a pointer that stays black all the time?
