I have a question about How
do I skip the Product Activation in Windows XP?:
Hey, I caught a really bad virus (protection bar) earlier today on my Xps Laptop.
I tried to get rid of it by going onto the control panel and removing Internet explorer,
because I already had Mozilla fire fox. That did not work and I had to run a system
restore on my computer (setting it back to the previous day), after this I logged
onto internet explorer and Lo' and behold I could not download or have any bookmarks
or anything. So I looked it up on the internet and I found out I had to re-install
XP. So I did, and now that it is re-installed I keep on getting this Pop-up that
says
"Windows Product Activation"
(big red X) This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can
log on. Do you want to activate Windows Now?
Yes No
I click yes and it logs onto the picture on my desktop and nothing happens for about
twenty minutes and then it logs out on it's own. If anyone can please help me here
I would be most greatful This is a 4,000$ New laptop. I don't want it to be broken.
The problem is that I can't contact microsoft and I can't do anything with my computer.
Please help me.

if this is a Dell , contact Dell tech support.....
if you paid $4K for a new computer , then you are
entitled to some help....

What make/model laptop and how did you reload XP? Did you use the restore partition,
restore CD or do you have another copy of XP that you used.
Why can't you contact MS? The Microsoft Windows Product Activation phone number
(for the US anyhow) is 1-888-571-2048

Your best option for several reasons is to do a clean installation of XP onto the
computer.

Dell PCs come with some sort of restoration option, which will take the PC back to
the day you bought it. But, all files and configuration changes made since then
will be lost. Check your documentation. The two most popular options are a restoration
CD (1 or more) or a hidden partition accessed via a bootable floppy or a bootable
CD. If necessary, contact Dell support for details.
If you want to save personal files before the restoration, download a copy of one
oif several free "live" LINUX CDs. These boot a PC into LINUX, without writing to
the hard drive. They recognize most USB and firewire peripherals, if plugged into
the PC at the time of booting. Then use the LINUX file manager to copy files off
of the PC. Some live ditributions also support CD writing. My favortie is KNOPPIX.
It is a large download, but worth it. Just do the download on a PC with high-speed
internet access. Then, use an option like "burn-to-disk" in Nero or Easy CD Creator
to make the CD. do not siply drag&drop the ISO file to a CD:

A friendly FYI, the program is called Dell PC Restore by Symantec, accessed by pressing
CTRL+ F11 at the Dell startup logo.

The Dell restores that I've used allow you to do a Reapir (install over) or Clean
(format first) install, similar to a normal XD CD.
