I have a question about Stop Windows from asking if you want to send a report to Microsoft whenever a program crashes:

I just wanted to extend my sincere thanks for offering this Annoyance tip. It makes me SO happy to disable it!!! No need for replies. Just had to say THANKS!! Brynn

Windows XP's Online Crash Analysis is on my personal list of the 5 best things about
Windows XP.

Microsoft actually analyzes the data from the reports and has corrected quite a few
problems. Just the other day a customer called to say that his normally very reliable
XP Pro computer blue-screened as he was trying to work with a Lan Fax program. I
remoted in and tried it myself, also seeing the bluescreen. After the computer restarted,
OCA displayed a dialog box of what was wrong, what program caused the problem, and
what MS KB I needed to read to fix the problem. Now that's a useful feature!!!

(Turned out there was a problem with an incompatibility with a Ricoh Lan Fax driver
and a recent Windows Update....off to the KB to get the fix, boom, done in less than
5 minutes.)

This type of report-analysis-fix feature does rely heavily on people sending in those
reports, though, so I would encourage you to keep doing so.

Hi Dan,

I wish MS had been as reliable when a KB update broke my Realtec AC97 Audio.

Did it need the update to break? :) I ask because the AC'97 device has been spontaneously disappearing from my laptop since I got it in 2004 - the first time it happened was before I applied any upgrades. The only cure I've found is to shut down completely and boot up again, or uninstall the damn thing via Device Manager and then reinstall it.

I've never had a problem with the Realtec Audio until the KB 925902.

I did a simple Restore Point to repair it and haven't had a problem since.

Here are some links regarding the KB update glitch.

This particular problem was fixed by both a fix from MS and an updated Lan Fax program
file from Ricoh.

Thanks Dan,

I think that I had a link to the MS repair, but decided to simply avoid that KB925902
update altogether.

So far nothing has crashed nor gone up in smoke.

Thanks for the info. If I ever strike it I will know where to look.
It looks like Microsoft did finally fix it.

You might want to bookmark Microsoft's 'fix' for their mischief.

Thanks, I'll add it to my ever-expanding list.

Though unless it refers to the properties panel for the device, I have never encountered
the "Realtek Audio Control Panel"
