Question about 'Customize the Tray'

I have a question about Customize
the Tray:
Is the reason that customizing the tray via [Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu
> Taskbar tab > Customize button] is not even mentioned in this article because that
feature just doesn't work? If so, I'll go straight for solution offered in the article.
If the feature *should* work, I'd like to go ahead and describe me specific problems
with it, and ask for comments. Thank you very much. Brynn

Oh dear, I hope my 1st message did not sound critical. I certainly did not mean
to criticize the article. Sometimes when I try to be concise, things don't come
out the way I intend.
Or maybe there's another reason why there haven't been any replies -- maybe because
the answer is obvious ("just dl the programs supplied with the article (Tray)")?
Maybe I'm being overly cautious, security-wise? But the program, "Tray", downloads
from an IP address, which makes me nervous. And the description in the article "...customize
the various aspects of the tray:" seems quite vague. And I'm a really new member
here at annoyances.org, so I can't rely on very much past experience. (Although
this very limited experience has NOT been negative.)
(Sorry to be a bit long-winded, but I want to be sure I'm clear.) While waiting
for replies, I've been doing further searching into the system tray problems. I've
found several different programs which could address my several problems with the
tray. So now I'm wondering if someone can tell me more specifically what "Tray"
does. For example, does it have a working 'hide inactive icons' feature, to be used
in place of the one supplied with XP which doesn't work? If so, does it override,
replace the latter, or fix it? Can hidden icons be temporarily unhidden? Does it
provide a means of launching other programs or apps from the tray?
Thank you very much :-)

Hey, I think I may have found an actual fix for the disappearing tray icons problem.
Well, it's not from Microsoft, so maybe it's not official....heck, maybe it's not
technically a fix. I'll have to leave that to the more programming-aware members
among you, to say exactly what type of software it is. But from what I can tell,
it sounds like a very worthwhile little program, and certainly useful for customizing
the tray. Although disclaimer, I have not yet downloaded or tried to use it yet.
Look more than halfway down this page http://www.desktopian.org/appsi_comp.html,
maybe 2/3 to 3/4 down, at the section titled "SysTrayHack". There are several links
within that section where more knowledgable folk than I, can find detailed info about
its origins and sources (I can't make heads or tails of it, myself). It is also
freeware. I'd be interested to hear comments, should anyone have a chance to look
into this program.
