I've got a nearly identical problem. I have two boxes, both with Service Pack 2
of XP Pro; I've owned one computer since 2005 and bought the other one last Sunday
(The older one is a home-built unit, the new one is a custom-built system). I bought
a router on Friday to set up a home network. Both computers connect satisfactorily
to the Internet via the router, but connecting to each other is a different story.
Computer #1 (the older machine) sees the other machine, Computer #2, over the network
connection, but cannot access Computer #2; the error message tells me I might not
have permission to use that network resource. Trying to look at the properties of
Computer #2 under "Microsoft Windows Network" (I'm using the default network name
MSHOME at this point) yields another error message telling me that that computer
(server) can't be found on the network.
Meanwhile, six feet away, Computer #2 can't see Computer #1 at all. The error message
on that box tells me I might not have permission to access that network resource
AND it can't retrieve a list of servers for the workgroup.
I used Network Setup Wizard to set up the network, and followed all directions precisely.
I actually turned off Windows Firewall before running the Wizard (it turns back
on automatically after the Wizard is done), and have checked-and double-checked to
make sure:
1) that the computer names are different;
2) that the workgroup name is the same on both machines;
3) that File and Printer Sharing is enabled;
4) that Windows Firewall is allowing File and Printer Sharing to operate across the
LAN.
Looking at the configuration screens for the router (a Dynex DX-E401) doesn't yield
much useful information. As far as I can tell all the router's settings are at default.
Anyone got any ideas? I've been going around in circles on this all morning.
