That probably would have happened no matter what Firewall you were using. You open
up the Computer to being Hacked when using the IM services.

Any of the free ones work fine, but when sharing Files on Instant Messenger Services,
and using P2P software, you just open up the Computer to who ever you are sharing
with. A Firewall makes no difference.

I use Comodo Firewall.
A tad chatty but works well.
As Steve said, won't help in your situation but still a good, free firewall.

anthony,
Doesn't matter how much you spend on a firewall. If you use p2p you're bypassing
that expensive firewall. You might as well not be running a firewall at all.
if you must use p2p try running knoppix. It's a linux distribution that's CD based
and runs entirely in ram. If you get hacked you just reboot into an entirely fresh
copy of knoppix. Any files you down load can be saved on a hard drive dedicated to
data. You can then access the saved files from your usual OS... after first scanning
those downloaded files for viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

It's either security or your file sharing, whichever is most important to you. You
really can't have both, as they contradict each other. Some of the most knowledgeable,
experienced users may be able to manage it, but not the average user.

So what's being said here is that if you have only the necessary ports open with
a firewall to run a file-sharing P2P application properly that you will get 'hacked?'
I guess that if there are vulnerabilities in the particular P2P client that's being
used or a user doesn't set up the files to be shared properly (i.e. sharing the entire
drive rather than only a single folder, file, etc.) or sets the client to automatically
execute any files downloaded then yes, I can see a problem. I'd be curious as to
what really was the cause of the problem the OP has.

Instant messenger services are big Hacker targets now. A Firewall offers no real
protection from this type of Hacker. File sharing in general is avenue for many other
Hacking Trojans.

One option is to create a limited access account for the P2P software to run under,
then deny it access to anything except the folder your shared files are in.
1) Create a "Guest" account with a strong password (typically 10 characters, no birthdays
or the like)
2) Add the new user account to the P2P folder
3) Right-Click the P2P program and choose "Run As"
4) Select the "The Following User" option
5) Enter the username and password you created
6) Click "OK"
** The reason you create a "Guest" account is because "Guest" doesn't show up on
any permissions by default. Typically "Users", "Administrators" and "System" do...
** Just for safety's sake, you can check the permissions on IExplore.exe (Internet
Explorer) and remove the user account if it shows up there.
** If you open Task Manager and check "Show processes from all users", you should
see your P2P running under the new account

fundamentally, winXP is not something the average user can easily and reliably configure
so that using p2p software becomes a "safe" activity.
anyone had any experience with virtual machines that might answer the original question?

P2P is not exactly the most favorite theme on this Forum.Probably due to several
Factors. One is the poor Security a user is able to maintain with one of those Clients
running.
Another Factor is,that it is considered Off Topic.
You probably can extend the list Ad Infinitum.
Probably some better answers on some of those P2P-Forums.Google has tons of Hits
on that Topic.

This forum is for Windows XP related issues. Pick anything, doesn't matter. It's
your decision to make.
Or, go ask some of your peers on a P2P forum what they recommend. Oh, that's right..
they steal most of the apps they want.
Anyhow, goodbye. It appears everyone's had enough of you.
