First of all, is the service really needed. Can it be disabled? I seem to remember a trick. Something about copying a folder from your XP disk to your hard drive and making a change in the registry to point to that folder and run from there. In essence making the need of retrieving the XP disk null and void. Anybody remember where to find the instructions on that?

I had no idea what your original question was asking but your 2nd post sort of cleared it up :-) I use the following reg file to do this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

"SourcePath"="C:\\"
"ServicePackSourcePath"="C:\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]

"SourcePath"="C:\\"
Change C: to whatever drive you put the I386 folder on and voilla`, no more need for the XP CD for WFP or SFC or when you add new hardware and a file from the CD is needed.

I've changed both keys and copied my i386 folder to my c:\ drive and it's still asking for the disk. Any ideas? Do I need to copy more than my i386 folder?

No, that should be all that is needed. I use this reg file all the time and it has never not worked. Make sure you are changing it exactly as shown, or cut and paste the red data into notepad then save it as runsfcfromhd.reg (or some meaningful name for you). RIght click on it and select Merge, Click OK a couple times.

I cut and paste your script and it seems to be working like a charm. Did a complete
install, for the second time, on my father-in-laws PC and not a single prompt for
the XP Disk.

Thank You.
