C: Permissions what happens when you deny system?

Command when opened three files not found.

Does anyone know what will happen if you deny the system ownership OR full control? Is it ok deny the system RW attributes only? Also is it ok to delete the owner profile? It currently has no permissions.

Thank You.

Sorry but your question does not make any sense. What are you trying to do? Why are you doing it?

Denying the system (that would be XP) access to anything is not a good idea. Why do you want to do this?

What I'm trying to do is get back authurization of all files. You see regardless of admin status of any account, there are still files and folder's that are hidden, regardless of your "folder options" IE: the folder "cookies" will stay hidden no matter what you do, however I have learned of a method to change that, this is the problem: It becomes quite a hassle to do the procedure and when you unhide dektop.ini it likes to appear every time you reach your desktop and then you have to go back and rehide it. If you unhide the wrong ones, then they will appear in sub folders and everywhere causing extreme lag. Do you know of a way to exlude dektop.ini in command?

Thank You.

I've never heard of a Cookies folder. On my XP system, cookies are kept in

C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

and are fully visible.

I agree that there are some hidden folders that are not visible from a command prompt but they are visible from Windows Explorer. An example is the Recycle Bin

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-796845957-1284227242-839522115-1004

and even with that one, if you know the correct path you can change to it in a command prompt.

They are hidden to prevent users from doing things that will trash the system. Whatever you are trying to accomplish, I wish you luck.

Well Rich there IS a cookie's folder under C documents and setting and your user name. If you open command and exit explorer and type attrib, you may see files and folder that you did not before. about recycler, I can unhide recycler but no, I do not know the correct path to change it in command. clue me in?

Thank You.

Open a command prompt, cd \recycler. Type cd and press the Tab key.

Note: There has to be a space after cd before you press the Tab key.

I have 3 computers, two desktops and one laptop. All run XP Pro and there is no Cookies folder under C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid on any of them. I did a Google search and other folks agree with you, saying there is. Very strange. Do you have XP Home or XP Pro? Could have anything to do with IE7, which I refuse to install on any of my computers?

It seem's as though that the placement of these files and folders, changes with each release of windows. That part is obvious but what about they're attributes? They change too. So can anyone tell me what it is that a particular index.dat file contains? Beside's that of the registry information. Also, is there a safe way to view these content's?

Thank You.

In response to IE7, yes I do have IE7. Why do you refuse to install it on your computer? And also it very will could relate to IE7 I remember upgrading to IE7 but I'm not sure how to check the version of internet explorer. Can you tell me how to do that? And, is it possible to down grade if need be?

Thank You.

In response to command prompt. There are as you may already know, there are TWO command prompts. You can go to start, run and type cmd.exe which will bring up your basic windows command prompt OR you can type command and that will bring up your system32 command prompt. There is not a big difference in the two that I have discovered however, in the system command your instructions did not work where in cmd.exe they did....pretty interesting. What say you werner?

Thank You.

It would take a week to describe everything that's in an index.dat file ! But help is at hand - this link takes you to a neat index.dat reader which will give you an unequivocal answer for ech of your index.dat files. I've tried it - it works. The contents of each file are fairly obvious when you see them laid out. Index_spy

You know it amazes me how free E-mail clients pose as user friendly all in one search engines and then they take the information that you give them that they claim to protect, and embed it into your registry and don't even bother to encrypt it for you.....it's just right there plain as day like saying "hey internet thieves I'm sensitive data! Feel free to do with me what you wish!"

Thank You.
