I am wanting to open a .exe file. I have accidentally set these files to open w/
quicktime. How do I set .exe files to open w/ the correct program (assuming this
is the set up wizard???)? I also cannot open my .torrent files due to the same problem.
If I choose open with:, none of the programs are the correct program to open either
a .exe or .torrent.
Thanks

EXE files are not opened with a program. They are self executing. If their extension
has been changed to something else, then you have to change it back for them to work,
as they can't be opened with another program to run them. The only apps that can
open them are code editors for their particular code type for editing/programming.
You may have to explain a little more in detail what has happened and exactly what
the names of the files are, or were supposed to be.
All you should have to do is click/double click on an EXE to run it. If it brings
up a dialog to "open with", the extension is either wrong, (as in it isn't a real
EXE or is an EXE but has the wrong extension on it), or the file is corrupted.

Warning about EXE files..

I meant to add to my previous post, EXE files can contain viral/malware code, especially
when coming from peer to peer sharing networks. See here:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-an-exe-file.htm
Unless you are 100% sure of what you are getting, and even then, always scan them
with an up-to-date virus scanner before executing them on your system.

EXE extension isn't listed on any of my installs (since they don't need a program
to run). Are they on yours?? I do have an EXE_XX type associated with outpost firewall
but that's it. Bit Torrent files are a different animal altogether. I would say
the OP doesn't know how to work with them, but that is for a different forum.. ;-)

The file I am trying to open is a WMP torrent viewer. It allows WMP to open torrent
files. The file displays as WMP.exe, but when I mouse over it, it says "file type:
torrent". When I downloaded this file, it had the generic program/setup icon.
I accidentally chose the open with: Quicktime option and it caused an obvious error.
Now the file thinks it needs to open w/ Quicktime, and due to the fact that .exe
files don't need a program to open them, I cannot change the "open with" property.
Right click any file you have. Now, pretend that none of the recommended programs
or additional programs can open this file. You can't download a program to open
it because it is an .exe file. You have accidentally assigned Quicktime to open
it but you want to change it back to its default status. What would you do?

Unfortunately, this forum isn't exactly friendly to P2P associated questions so you
should seek out a forum that deals with Bit Torrent. WMP (Windows Media Player)
will play back complete media files but isn't designed as a viewer so I'm not sure
what you downloaded or if it is even complete which may be part of the problem.
You may benefit with some tools like this:
http://torrentspy.sourceforge.net/features.shtml
I for one don't use P2P of any type due to security and legal issues so can't help
much, but from what I understand, there can be many issues and we really don't help
with them in this forum due to the afore mentioned security and legal issues. Torrent
files can have any type of file in it or can have multiple types of different files
in them so they have a process of opening that is usually done by the torrent software.
I would have to see the file in question to know how to help but I would say there
are some issues involved which we can't see from a forum.. :-( Good Luck!

You are probably right. I think I will just seek for a more substantial method to
view this media. I had no idea that this stuff was potentially harmful.
Thanks

Don't know what your experience level is with P2P or Torrent in general but maybe
this will help to understand it a little better..

Blair, is it just the one .exe file or all .exe files? If all then the EXE fix from
here will correct it:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
If it's just the one, delete it, download it again and see what happens.
C K Is right though. P2P applications can be very dangerous to your PC's health.
