Cheapest option is to buy an OEM Version of Windows XP, you will need to buy some
hardware at the same time, but, this can be a very cheap mouse for a quid, take a
look at the following website:

http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=225

Only £52.38 for the Windows XP Home edition. Delivered to your door on a next day
delivery for only £2.34.

JO-

If this is your first computer and you will be learning how to use a new operating system anyway, Linux is free. http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT5272648562.html

Since it is an illegal copy, it may actually contain malware as part of the OS. You do need a legal copy of Windows XP if that is what you want to run.

Do be careful of things that sound "Too good to be true." They usually are. Call Microsoft. Explain the situation. Tell them you want to be compliant, and what are your options. They are actually quite helpful with those who are reporting and attempting to correct Windows piracy.

Do expect to spend some money on XP no matter how it works out.

You could also just live with it. Other then the annoyance of the message, I don't think anything else will happen.

Isn't it just a matter of getting rid of WGA Notification? Although, it's hard to tell what all is on the system, probably a huge mess of malware, and so on.

I have always wondered if the Malware claim was MS Propaganda. :).........Not really sure, but if all the User does is Email, and Freecell, I doubt it matters to much. I sure wouldn't like the Counterfeit Warning on My Computer, but a lot of Folks have a hard time reinstalling Windows, the Drivers are the real pain for many who really don't know what they got as far as Hardware. My Dad can't even use System Restore without Me talking Him through it on the Phone.

I agree completely, Steve. It's just a technicality. It may be even be a false positive, who knows.

A lot of the false positives went around. I bet they are are on the 4th or 5th generation of WGA now. Lost count since I always avoided the update site anyway, and Have not run into it from anyone I help out either.

If the computer is a recognizable name brand, when new it probably came from its
manufacturer with a MS OS preinstalled--if so, it's very likely that it is still
licensed to run that OS.

In any case, look for an approx 1" x 3" colorful label on the side, back or top (or
bottom if a lappy). This would be the MS Certificate of Authenticity that would
tell you what the computer came with originally. 99% of the time you are still legally
able to run that OS.

Post back and let us know.
