Downloads Fail/Stall

I do not have alot of information on this problem, happens with Firefox and IE. Running XP sp2 not-fully updated, working with Microsoft on getting the product key working again, something about the volume dealer I purchased it from not in business or something. Other download managers/software seem to work, p2p, game updaters etc. But the basic internet downloads seem to halt at various intervals. Running on Bellsouth DSL with a new dual core system. Can anyone point me to something relevant on this problem? Do I have to wait on Microsoft to send me a new key?

A few tips -- if your PC is NOT going into standby/hibernate:
1. Test your download method/site -- go to download.com and find a 10MB (or greater)
program to save. If this works, the site or your ISP (or a combo) has the problem.
This problem is most noticable on youtube, etc, where several hundred thousands may
be trying to d-load the same file.
2. Try an even larger file from download.com. If it fails, call your ISP (or look
at their home page). Try d-loading from their mirror site.
3. Firewall/anti-virus settings.
4. replace the modem. THEIR modem.

The modem I use is a Zoom ADSL 6+, I purchased myself. Although after reading various posts I realized I havent tweaked the settings for this computer yet. I will try this later tonight and hope it helps. When it comes to large downloads, Id say the limit is about 3megs, anything larger is almost a 100% fail. The router/modem is wireless and the laptops seem to work ok when they connect thru network. Firewall/Anti-Virus are Avast/Zone Alarm.

The laptops staying connected makes me think of hardware first. If your router has
several ports, move the cable to another. Next, replace the cable. Finally, look
at the network card UNLESS you have the router connected via USB.
If that is the case, you could try removing any other USB devices, but I would pull
that cable and connect via the ethernet connection. If you have firewire ports (on
the PC and the router) it will be faster, but I cannot predict reliability. Furthermore,
the (firewire) cable will cost more and your ISP probably does not meet/exceed the
100Mbps speed of a standard ethernet port.
