laptop won't go into standby mode.

My Toshiba A75-S226 laptop recently started acting strange. When i try to put it
in standby mode, it goes back to a regular desktop screen (no error messages, etc).
When I shut it down, it seems like it shuts down properly although it seems to take
a little longer than usual. However, when I go to start the laptop again, the first
screen that shows up is a black screen with a small window that says "Windows is
shutting down". Does anyone have an idea of what may be happening? Thanks. Dave
