Mouse Scroll Problem With XP

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with XP and the mouse keeps scrolling up and down, sometimes so much I loose control of what I'm working on. When it first started, all I had to do was clean the rollers and it worked fine but now that doesn't even work. It is a Logitech PS/2 mouse with a scroll button. I have tried different mice (including an optical one) and mousepad (and no mousepad) but it still does it. I even uninstalled the software and rebooted but it still does it. I even slowed the speed of the mouse down but it still does it. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix this annoying problem? Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem a week ago, my mouse just went crazy. It's a Logitech ball which I clean every so often but this was something completely different. It would pause then jump and the scroll was spastic. I'm in Baja California so these items are not available so I ordered another mouse online. I restarted my computer several times and reloaded the mouse, still no luck. Guess what, two days later everything was back to normal...as you might guess I'll now have a spare mouse. Cory

Some kind of malware perhaps? Have you tried a USB mouse?

How long has this been happening? A quick Google search turned up a few cases where installing IE7 caused uncontrolled scrolling. Did you recently install IE7?

How does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem. Try the following:

First, physically disconnect from the Internet to prevent a malware infection while
your Anti-virus and/or Firewall are disabled in the following steps, then do a normal
boot:

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab and disable everything.
Do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, click on the Services tab. Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box
then disable what's left.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.
Reconnect to the Internet when done.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it form your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
