Internet Connection Sharing not working with Inspiron 600m

I'm trying to set up Internet Connection Sharing on my laptop, running XP sp2. My broadband modem is connected to the ethernet port, and I have a built-in wireless modem that I was hoping to be the access point for the local network. I had been able to do this years ago using Win98 and an Orinoco PCMCIA wireless card. I forget how, but I was able to get that wireless card to function as a base station of sorts (i.e. a named resource that other wireless connections could connect into). I go through the wizard and it correctly picks out the two cards, but at the end of the process the wireless card is not a connectable resource, even if I click the advanced tab and mark that I want to share this resource. I've done lots of permutations on connecting directly or indirectly (I'm connecting to a DSL modem, so I think indirect is correct, but I've tried both). I don't really even know how to debug this. I'm assuming that the internal modem maybe can't function as an access point, even from the standpoint of a personal network (really just want one other machine to share the printer and internet connection). Thanks.

"I'm assuming that the internal modem maybe can't function as an access point, even from the standpoint of a personal network" Correct assumption. You need a (wireless) router.

Another response suggested you can't do what you write about. Wireless NICs can operate as "ad-hoc" networks, but doing so exposes your machine to compromise, even if it's on your own network. You also mention that your laptop is directly connected to your broadband modem. That potentially exposes your machine to the big bad internet.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone, pick up a wireless router, like the Linksys WRT54G, which is often on sale at less than $60. It will provide a hardware firewall for your laptop and all other machines on your network. It will also solve the issue of providing an access point for internet sharing.

Remember, even if you do set up your laptop to share the connection, it has to be on to do so.

Not exactly, my Orinoco card could function as an access point if it was configured that way. I had another wireless card that could do the same thing.

I actually have a wireless router, but I'd prefer not to use it if I don't have to. It is bulky with all the wires, and takes unneeded power. I'll try another wireless card, I guess that is the answer. As far as security is concerned, someone is just as likely to hack into that as my PC. I have windows firewall. There are so many exposures, this is just one more (example, many of the zero-day exploits allow people on a web-site you've visited to collect info on your PC, or install a root kit, this bit about someone coming in on my home computer is the least of my worries).
