Windows Update .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 I'm having trouble installing this update from Windows Update. It downloaded automatically but it won't install. It just says 'the following updates were not installed.' I tried a few times, and even restarted my computer and tried again. I checked in my Microsoft.NET\Framework folder and have v1.0.3705 and v1.1.4322 installed... Does anyone know what my problem might be? Thanks, Angie

I would uninstall all the netframeworks in add/remove programs and the just manually download the latest net framework exe file from Microsoft, and install it,

I've just been alerted today via Windows Update to install the same .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 update, and am having the same problem. I followed all of Microsoft's troubleshooting steps: stopping the Windows Update Service, deleting all stored Update installation files and history, starting the Windows Update service again, and still can't install it. I've rebooted and followeed the above troubleshooting steps again, but continue to error out when Windows Update attempts to install. I think there's something corrupt or missing in the update files downloaded via Windows Update (using Vista Ultimate 32-bit.)

Hi;

This is a common problem with Vista. The update (Microsoft .net 1.1 Service Pack 1) that Microsoft released yesterday, November 28, has been a major problem for many Vista users, including myself.

The help files and the Microsoft support website contain step-by-step instructions but neither source contains a workable solution.

The problem has a solution, in fact, and it's pretty easy:

1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38 and download the installer for .net 1.1 service pack 1. Run the installer.

2) Restart Vista.

3) Go to "Windows Update" and click "Check for updates". It will find a security update for the service pack you just installed.

4) Relax and cuss at Microsoft under your breath.

This solution worked on Vista Home Premium 32 Bit edition but it may very well work on the other flavors. Your mileage may vary and don't come asking me for help if it doesn't work. Microsoft has free tech support for update issues, try contacting them if all fails.

Thanks for your response. I, in fact, had done exactly as you said right before reading your message, after spending a few more minutes online researching this (apparently being experienced by lots of Vista and XP users yesterday and today - I think only XP users that have Windows Defender installed.) All's well now.

It's pretty rude to hijack someone else's thread, and you're not even running XP. In the future post on the appropriate forum. Consider this one read-only.

Whaaaaht?? My post dealt directly with the issue at hand, specifically the Windows Update failing to install the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 update. I mentioned that I was running Vista, only to let everyone know that the same thing was happening to Vista users. If you'll check the Vista forum, you'll see that I posted the issue there primarily.

OK, well... it's not of much interest to anyone on this forum, if Vista users are having the same problem. Nothing that's helpful to the original poster.

I am running XP and have also encountered a problem installing the update. Just wanted you to know that I for one do appreciate your input. I plan to try your suggestion very soon. Again, thanks!

I solved the problem regarding the windows update of Net Framwork 1.1 Service Pack 1. I looked under ADD/REMOVE programs via CONTROL PANEL and noticed that I already had Framework version 2 and version 3 installed. My intention was to remove Framework 1.1 Service Pack and re- download again . However, after I deleted Framework 1.1, the problem seemed to solve itself and Windows no longer tried to get me to download it with any prompts! I them went into Windows Updates to see if there were any critical updates that I needed and there were none.

Had same problem as Angie running XP. Followed microsofts advice involving tedious uninstalling and deleting items in registry then reinstalling to no avail. Then downloaded the cleanup tool that microsoft advised, to no avail. Followed Marks's advice and problem solved! Thank ever so much, Mark.
