XP Re-install / Fresh install problems

After suffering months of freezing PC and blue screens (primarily the dreaded kernel
stack error. I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website,
done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and
all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and
run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop.
1 year of trouble-free life until this.
I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole
shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start
load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524
OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).
Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine.
Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same
moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then
the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524,
0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to
have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.
Can anyone suggest what I try next?

These errors are always difficult to nail down :-(
I'd start here.
If you click on 7B in the left hand column, the pre-amble says
"Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process.
Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading
storage adapter hardware, or a virus" . . .
. . .and is followed by some references which may provide clues to what is happening
on your system.

Anthony:
As I'm sure you know, STOP errors are hardware problems.
The common occurrence with this issue is CD Rom access. Your system blue screens
while booting and does the same while running the Windows CD. Windows tests all peripherals
while booting, including the CD drive.
Try disconnecting the drive and booting from your hard drive.
Also, while you have the case open, make sure all the cooling fans are operational
and clean, especially the fan on the processor. If cooling is the issue, the processor
would overheat within the first minute or two after activating a machine. It shuts
down because of a heat sensor located near the processor to protect the chip from
being destroyed by overheating.
If neither of these suggestions help, you may have a bad drive controller on the
motherboard. Is your warranty still in effect?
Please post what you find. This is one of those problems that, if you find the answer,
your post can be a great help to others.

Sytem boots from HDD fine (CD connected) and PC runs OK until you ask it to do a
lot at a time. Then the system runs very slowly and more often than not freezes.
You get (mostly) the kernel stack error screen.
As it runs fine (apart from this!) it is probably not a heat problem.
The subsequent "unrecognised boot device error" appears when I try to re-install
XP to either the existing HDD or the completely new one (with the old one disconnested)
Warrant just run out (sod's law). Am I looking at a new motherboard?
