Mouse left click behaving as right click

I'm having the following issue with my HP Pavillion 754n: - Double click is not working correctly when pressed over an icon in the desktop or the explorer. Instead, it shows a context menu with the options "open" and "search". - A single click or double click over an empty area of the desktop activates the context menu as if I had pressed right click. - Right click does not do anything. - When I open Excel, it seems as if the left click were locked because it starts highlighting (selecting) the area where I move the mouse pointer. - I have tried reinstalling mouse drivers, but it have not worked. The mouse is a PS/2 compatible and I also tested a USB mouse to discard hardware problems and the issue continued. - Tried restoring the system and it did not work. - I also tried reistalling windows and it did not work

I forgot to say that I also check the mosue configuration in the control panel and switched the mouse buttons, but that action has no effect because both buttons stop working.

Assuming you have tried to make changes to your mouse buttons via the Control Panel to no avail, read on. I rarely use my XP PC so I'm not able to say anything with authority but I had a similar problem to yours when I tried using a 3 button mouse. According to Logitech there was an issue with Win 2000 and SP upgrades depending on which version of their mouse driver software used (I assume any SP upgrade, even XP's is suspect). I couldn't get the mouse to function properly in 2K-sp4 or XP-SP2 on my laptop with a touchpad. My right mouse button is normally used for double clicking. It would only work as a you describe yours as doing - normal right click activity. I finally gave up and loaded the Microsoft Intellipoint 5.2 mouse drivers and I now can enable the rt button to "double click". The Logitech software recognized the touchpad and refused to load other than USB support I believe. But even w/a USB mouse the double click assignment to the rt button was not working. I used the Logitech 9.7 software and tried the 9.79(?) I downloaded to no avail. Yours may be a similar issue, only guessing but look at the Logitech site (if you use their mice) for more info on the SP issues. Let me know if you have any success so we can track down the problem. - Louis

The mouse that I'm using is the HP PS/2 mouse that comes with the HP Pavillion 754n. According to HP is a virus issue, but Symantec checked this problem and said that it is a hardware issue. I this point I do not know what to do when even reinstalling Windows XP does not work

First thing to try is another mouse. Borrow one, or buy one - basic mice are very cheap indeed.

I already tested several mice and the behaviour is the same. No matter which mouse I use, I get exactly the same result.

Well, if you have reinstalled windows and the mouse driver, and tried a different mouse, what does that leave ? 1. Bad cable or socket 2. Conflicting software (tablet, joystick . . . ) nb Does this happen in safe mode - worth checking. That's all I can think of !

I tried everything even in safe mode, but in safe mode the mouse behaves exactly like that.

Then it sounds as if you have hardware damage.

What kind of hardware damage? My wife said that she received a file from e-mail at work and after that the mouse started behaving like that. I contacted Symantec and they did not find any issue.

Ricardo, have you been able to try a USB mouse to see if the same problem exists? Based on what you've told us so far it does seem like hardware problems, not software. You did say that you've reinstalled windows (full, clean reinstall?) and if you did and the same problem exists it only points to hardware problems (baring a mouse software problem on one of your disks). I'm not knowledgable enough on the hardware side but a loose wire or bent pin on the PC side would only take a minute of your time to check out. Hot swapping probably/usually won't cause a problem from what I've been told. I've had mice disconnect while moving a laptop and I just reboot rather than plug it back in. You stated "I tried everything even in safe mode, but in safe mode the mouse behaves exactly like that." That sounds like a hardware issue considering you've reinstalled Windows and the problem still exists. Sorry I can't find the solution to help you with the problem but I'm certainly interested in hearing what you find is the cause when it gets resolved. - Louis

And I am having the EXACT same problem too. SONY PCV-RX650 desktop, with WinXP Professional. Everything was just fine till yesterday. I have to check what setting was changed by the wife, or change caused by auto Symantec &/or Windows update? Please help.

I'm also having the same problem on XP. It was working one moment and as I was scrolling through a folder the mouse started behaving this way. Before this I have been using the mouse for more than a year without problems. I have a Sony VAIO lappy with a Logitech mouse. I have the same model mouse at work so I'll try it out tomorrow to see if I can rule out hardware problems with the mouse itself. Will post here once I know and please, if anyone finds a solution then do post.

My earlier post was a reply to a reply to a reply... it's somewhere up there. I had the exact same problem and my problem at least appears to be hardware related. The problem suddenly started as I was scrolling through a folder with a mouse I've been using for years. The behavior is very strange though... left click works on some thing (like minimize buttons that don't normally respond to right-click) but not on others (like the bare desktop where this is interpreted as a right-click). Rebooting or trying different USB ports didn't seem to have an effect. I had another mouse of the same model at work and this one appears to have no problem. I swapped between mice a couple of times and the best conclusion I can draw is that the one is now broken. Strangely while I have the broken one plugged in the trackpad on my lappy also exhibits the same faulty behaviour; as soon as I unplug it the trackpad is also fixed. My laptop is a Sony VAIO and my mouse is a Logitech... one of those with the cord that rolls up.

I have the same problem with my XP pc using a USB mouse. REALLY annoying, tried changing mice, virus checked with various scanners, malware checked and nothing. Any more news? Cheers
