Chkdsk / f

When I run a Chkdsk / f the results appear only extremely briefly before Windows XP executes. How do I get the results to stay on screen longer so I have time to view them properly. Are there any other Options that are a better way of seeing results.

On another of my Computers also XP Prof. (Registered) when I do a defrag one of the drives shows a failure to defrag by just 2 bytes? These are all Brand new SATA drives (250 GB each) why am I getting this recurring problem? Should Chkdsk / f correct this? Thanks

The results are in Start>Control Panel>Aminstrative Tools>Event Viwer>Application. Check each Winlogon under the Source column until you get the one with the Chkdsk results.

Do not know about the SATA problem.

Can't locate the chkdsk file under the Path you gave? Chkdsk fault is 2 Fragments of some 1500 (approx) bytes sorry.

Dont know where you are running chkdsk /f from, but try booting to the disk and then go for option r. This will take you to a dos type screen. Once finished the PC will not reboot until you have typed "exit".

From your overall thread it looks like you meant two bad sectors??
If so it's not a big deal. Hard drives are not required to be perfect. Most sold
today are, but it hasn't always been that way. You can't defrag to the byte level.
Also perfect defrags are pointless as the drive quickly fragments anyway, and it
takes an enormous amount of fragmentation to produce any significant performance
hit.

Switch the PC on and insert the XP disc. Hopefully during boot up you will get the message "press any key to boot from CD........". If you dont get this message reboot and enter the bios (normally F2), go to Boot Sequence and ensure it is attempting to read the CD before the Hard Drive. Once you have pressed a key to boot from CD the PC will boot from disc, this will take a few minutes and look as though you are loading a fresh copy of windows. Dont panic, you aint!! Once it has loaded you will be presented with a screen that has 3 options. Cant remember them all but they are along the lines of a. Press r to repair windows b. Press enter to install a fresh copy of windows. c. Do something else!! Press r. At this point, you may have to wait until it presents a "dos" screen to you. At this dos prompt enter chkdsk /f. The chkdsk will then run and, once finished, will stay on screen until such time as you tell the pc to reboot. This is done by typing "exit". Once the PC has rebooted, remove the disc and the PC will boot into windows as per normal. Hope that helps

To see the results of chkdsk /f

Your problem is that you're typing chkdsk /f directly into the Run window.

Instead, do this:

Press the Start button. Select Run. In the window, type:

cmd

Then, you'll get a DOS-like window, with a command prompt.

type the chkdsk /f command to the command prompt. The window will stay open as chkdsk
executes, and you can see the results.
