Software won't run in Windows XP x64

I just installed Windows XP Pro x64 as a Virtual Machine on my iMac. It was my intention to be able to run Windows-only programs on my Mac, except one of the very programs - RealLinkfinder I want to run there is incompatible with this 64-bit version of Windows XP. I could never have foresaw this problem. I never had this problem with Windows 2000.

Is there a work-around I could use to make it work?

Prerequisite check for system component .NET Framework 2.0 failed with the following error message: "This version of the .NET Framework 2.0 is not supported on a 64-bit operating system. Contact your application vendor."

See the setup log file located at 'C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\VSD58.tmp\install.log' for more information.

What part of the error message is it that you don't understand? This is one reason
why the 64bit version is not widely used.

Uninstall Net 2.0, and then install the version of Net 2.0 that's intended for 64bit Windows, which you can get here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=B44A0000-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00&displaylang=en

Ari, thank you for the helpful tip! The .Net download did just the trick. My application
was now able install and work. I wonder however if this will allow other programs
to work on x64.

At the time I ordered the Windows XP to install in my new iMac, I knew little about
the different versions and assumed 64 was the right choice since I have a 64-bit
processor. I probably should have ordered 32-bit instead. Is there any practical
reason to having 64-bit? Does it have better security, performance? Is it more stable?
I suppose I could always suspend it and only use it when I need to run Windows-only
programs. If x64 gives me too much trouble, I can always remove it, and get 32-bit.

I really wanted to go completely Mac, except not all software I need to use works
in Mac. Many smaller software developers don't develop Mac versions of their programs.

Fred

XP 32 is "mainstream" so there are many, many more apps, drivers, utilities and fixes for it. XP 64 has identical security and similar stability. In theory it can be multiple times faster but in practice you are limited by internal bus speeds, disk access times, external network speed, memory speed and the like and on a general purpose PC you won't see a worthwhile difference. Unless you are an avid gamer, or do major image / multimedia manipulations, I'd definitely stick with XP 32. No doubt going back will be painful - that's just a law of nature :-(

What you have just done will only help you for the small minority of programs that depend on .NET to run. However, nearly all programs written for 32 bit Windows will run just fine under 64 bit Windows. The major exception is drivers: in the long run, you'll probably be happier with 32bit if you are going to be connecting the machine to a lot of other devices (printers, etc.) that require drivers, because many devices lack drivers that are compatible with 64bit Windows.
