C: & D: opening up in new windows + more

i apologize in advance for not using the correct terms, so please bear with me. Windows XP Pro In lamest terms, when i open My Computer and access my C:, the C: opens up in a new window. the setting is set at "open each folder in the same window". My Computer -> C: -> opens in new folder, but if i open up another folder in the C:, it uses the same window and doesnt open up in a new one. i decided to do a system restore yesterday and the problem went away. however, that only lasted a day and i started having the same problem again. another problem i've been having has to do with hidden files. i have some hidden files, and usually you go to View -> Show Hidden Files and Folders and all the hidden files come up. but now when i check the Show Hidden Files option, nothing happens. I go back to View, and the bullet is on "Do Not Show..." Basically, i can't access the hidden folders without typing it in. Does that make sense? i would very much appreciate any help i can get because i have been stressing out about these annoyances for the past couple days now. Thanks.

Hello, maybe there is a simple answer. But first here are things to try:
1. Try it after a reboot into Safe mode. Any help?
2. Try it as another user with administrator privileges.
3. Last please read over this article about command line for windows explorer.
