Hi. Could someone help me and hopefully explain what my PC did yesterday...After
reboot, it went to a blank blue screen where "Please Wait" appeared at top left of
screen...Some process started and dots appeared after this instruction to indicate
progress....This lasted about 15 mins after which, the logon screen appeared and
all seemed fine...What happened?? Hope someone knows ! thanks !

Nothing at all...My pc had been logged on over night and I hadnt run any system or
maintenance apps...From memory Outlook froze, so I rebooted and did so without having
to force a restart...I run maintenance apps quite regularly and I've never seen this
screen before

Might have been CHKDSK running (are your precious files backed up ??), could have
been automatic installation of updates, if you have that feature turned on.
You got so little information its really hard to be any more definite. I suppose
I'd advise to give your PC a good thorough scan for viruses and spyware, look through
the start-up list in msconfig for any unexpected items . . . then relax.
BTW when you say "maintenance apps", what do you mean ?

Thanks MartinM....by "maintenance apps" I just mean defrag, cleanup and virus scans"...Sorry
for the confusion....All seems to be running just fine and the AVG virus scanner
hasnt picked up nor has my spy-ware scanner...I do have auto-update switched on,
so I suppose it must have been a microsoft update somewhat more involved than the
usual...Thanks again for the reassurance!

BTW I wouldn't run defragmentation too often. By its nature, NTFS does not have perceptibly
poorer performance until files become very fragmented, and the process of
defragging (involving moving lots - indeed maybe nearly all - of your files) carries
an inevitable if small risk of file corruption.
In normal use you might get through the life of an XP PC without really needing to
defrag and, if you really care, once a year may well suffice :-)
Its very different from FAT-based systems.
