Force cooling fans to run while on AC?

Hello all, I have a Compaq Presario M2000 notebook running a fresh install of XP Service Pack 2, and I was wondering if there was a way to force the processor cooling fan to stay on constantly. The top of the computer gets pretty warm when I'm using it out in the garage (no air conditioning out there) and I'd like to play it safe if possible. Especially given the fact that Compaq's aren't exactly renowned for hardware reliability, lol. Thanks!

If your Processor fan is cycling on & off there shouldn't be any problems. (indicates
fan is operating within set points).

When was the last time your processor fan was cleaned of Dust Bunnies?

There are coolers available for Laptops. Most have built-in fans. See below.

Google "Laptop Coolers" for more ideas.

Yes it does cycle, thank you for the advice. It has never been cleaned, but I've never really noticed any significant buildup on or around it. I have never owned a laptop prior to this one so my experience is limited to towers only. How do I get to it to clean it? It has a panel over it, but it appears to be the main panel covering the entire bottom of the computer...the rest of the access panels for the HDD and DVD drive appear to come right out. Thanks again!

N R,

Check the link below for disassembly.

I would suggest drawing a diagram indicating where case screws came from. There are
usually several different lengths involved. You don't want to take a chance on shorting
something out. It's too easy to forget where things came from.

Be sure to remove the Battery and disconnect AC power

If the laptop has been used in a non-dusty environment, and the fans are cycling, I would leave it alone. Laptops do run pretty hot, and the fact that the fan is not always on demonstrates that it is coping. The machine should be protecting itself from overheating (it will shut itself down, when you will know there's an issue).

On the other hand, opening the machine might invalidate any warranty, often needs special tools and can easily cause damage, or dislodge connections in the crowded space in the case.
