Desktop Icons Disappearing

My desktop icons keep disappearing temporarily.
So does my background.
This is intermittent. First my screen looks fine with icons and background. Then
the icons go , leaving taskbar and my background. Then the background dispappears
leaving my taskbar and a blue background.
A virus perhaps ?
Can anyone help ?

perhaps... have you scanned for any? Have you done any troubleshooting at all?
