CanoScan N640P Scanner

I have a scanner that was originally hooked up to a printer via male parallel cable
and a female parallel cable to the computer. I have now purchased a new printer
that is USB and while the scanner is still connected to the computer, the printer
via USB is connected to the computer, my computer is now telling me that there is
no scanner attached even though technically it is attached.
Is there anything I can purchase to get this scanner working please.
Sue

Thank you for your honesty. Yes, thought that would be the case but was chasing
straws anyway as it is a good slimline reliable little unit that has given me no
trouble over all those years. Hopefully the new one will be just as reliable.
Thanks again and knew that is what I would have heard back.
Cheers!

While your scanner is no longer actively supported by Canon, they still have updated
drivers for it on their European web site:
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0000471.asp
The info on their web site says that it supports and works with XP, so there is nothing
inherent in either that will keep them from working together...fact is, they worked
before. My guess is that changing the method of connection on the fly is not supported
by the drivers, but that an uninstallation then a fresh installation reflecting the
current physical hookup should get it going again.
First, uninstall any Canon software currently on the computer, then physically disconnect
the scanner. Restart the computer.
Next, check the documentation to make sure the CORRECT cable is being used. IIRC,
those printer-bypass scanners did not use standard IEEE1284 cables when bypassing
a printer, but did use a standard cable when directly connected to the parallel port.
Also check to see if you need to enable/disable any specific settings for the parallel
port, either in the BIOS (ie, Bi-directional, EPP ECP) or within XP (ie, IRQ related).
After looking into all that and adjusting as required, download the current drivers
and then do the instalaltion as if this was the first time it was being installed.
Post back to let us know if it worked for you!

Thank you for all your help. We did everything as you suggested and then realised
that we would also need to purchase a power supply 9.5V. Previously the scanner received
its power via the printer it was attached to and of course once it was no longer
attached would obviously need its own power. We are feeling rather foolish but still
think we would have required the other information you gave us. Will let you know
if the power source is all we needed but won't be able to get it for a few days.
Will be in touch with the info but thank you very much.

Thank you so very much for responding. It is not often I make a stupid call to annoyances
but found that when my friend separated her scanner from the computer etc, the power
cord also discarded itself to the floor. With so many cables etc with computers
we did not see this and have been working on the problem for a couple of weekends
together. Anyway apparently it always had its own power source but we assumed it
was coming from the computer - NO. It was on the floor.
Anyway at least with your help which hasn't gone to waste we now have the new updated
drivers and all is working really really well, even by changing the BIOS settings
which we still may have had too. So sorry to bother you but appreciated you coming
to our rescue and at least it is now a happy ending even though we are red faced.
Do think the BIOS was needing to be changed but you would know that better than
us.
Thanks again and just know your information has taught us something anyway.
