Windows XP Activation

I recently had problems with my computer, and had to replaces my hard drive and memory.
I therefore had to install Windows XP again. We have a few computers at home, each
of which came with an XP recovery disk. I took one of these (it could have been from
another computer - I'm not sure) and installed Windows again. I now have a countdown
for my 30 day activation period. My problem is I dont have an internet connection
on that computer, and am unable to activate. I researched this online, and the solution
seems to be to back up the files wpa.dbl and wpa.bak from my previous sytem and replace
them onto the new Windows. However, I only found this out now, and have therefore
lost the old files. The old hard drive is corrupt and therefore cant recover them
from there. Does anyone know of another solution and can someone provide me with
those 2 files?
Many thanks,
Sean

Follow the Phone Activation instructions that come up. You will be given a Phone
Number to call for the Area you live in.

Or just set up a phone i-net connection temporarily. Most (high-speed) isp's provide
for at least 10 hours of free phone (connection) time. Check their home page for
a local number.

The files will only work from the original machine with the original installation
flavor of Windows with no hardware changes. Not knowing what you used to reinstall
with, can't offer any more advice. I've tried using the original files on a new
install with even minimal hardware changes and it doesn't work. XP checks the hardware
and it won't match the original files so it will force you to call MS since you can't
activate online. You may have to call them anyway.

I managed to try activating by phone, however, the automated person said there was
an error on the generated ID number the computer gave me. Looking through all my
CD's I have found 2 different Windows XP CD's that I recieved with two different
computers, and realised I installed from the wrong CD onto my computer. Is there
a way to still activate this version, or would I have to re-install Windows from
the correct CD? It would take alot of time and effort to back up everything and re-install,
so a different solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are these recovery CD's from a big OEM manufacturer or are they MS type install CD's??
Usually to avoid headaches you need to use the CD that came with the computer (or
an install identical type) so a reinstall may be your only option. Without being
able to physically see what you have, I can't do much from a forum as far as good
advice. There are multiple possibilities. Some can't be activated by net or phone
now so it is important to use what came with the machine and go by the manufacturers
instructions for recovery or reinstallation as you may not have the option of activation,
if it is a preactivated install from the manufacturer. (Just one "for instance")
