Microsoft Update & Windows Update

I'm trying to run Microsoft Update or Windows Update under Windows XP Home w/SP2.
Problem: The activity bar shows that MS Update or Windows Update is running but it
seems as if the update process is in a loop. All I'm getting is is the activity bar
showing that the process is running. I let this run for quite awhile until I manually
end the process. Has anyone had this problem, if yes did you resolve it? Thanks for
any help!!

How long is "quite awhile"? It's possible, depending on the speed of your machine
and connection, to be getting that activity bar for 5 or 10 minutes while it inventories
the updates already on your system and compares them to what's available for download.

If you have MS Office installed and the updates are set to up date the Office Programs,
then 10 minutes is not unreasonable.

I probably let it go for about 5 min. I'll try it again and let it run longer. Thanks
for the suggestion.

When using MicroSoft Update, rather than Windows Update, all MS products on your
system are scanned for updates, and I believe, all MS software is checked for questionable
licenses/validation.
Makes for a long visit to MS Update.
There's nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Thanks to all replies. I took your suggestions and let the update run & after 13
minutes it worked fine. Thanks again!!
