New build not finding hard drives with XP

Hi Everyone. I have just about finished building my new computer but I am stuck. When I start the computer it boots to Asus boot menu and I can alter that, but when I just let it run, it asks if I want to boot windows normally. I hit enter and it says no hard drives found and restarts. My mother board is an ASUS M3A32-MVP with a AMD X2 6400+ processor. when I go into the Bios settings it shows the hard drive with XP on it and it shows the dvd drive. I have altered the boot sequence but that did not help. My hard drive is an IDE drive and the motherboard only has 1 IDE plug and everything else is SATA, which I do not have a Sata drive yet. A friend told me I need to format the hard drive to work with the new system but I really do not see how that will make the motherboard recognize the hard drive with Xp on it. The book says it will work with XP operating system. other things that you may want to know if it helps. 2 gig 1066mhz ram NVidia 8800gts Zalman cooler 550 watt power supply ( updating soon) 120 gig Western digital HD 160 gig Western digital HD Can anyone help me?? Thanks Bill

A old Install of Windows won't run on new Hardware, because of Driver problems. You
should do a Repair Install of Windows, or a Clean Install. First you might Try Booting
to your XP CD, and see if it finds your old Install. If it does, then you have to
decide which way you want to go.

You will need to do a repair reinstallation to get the old drive that was setup on
a different system to work with your new system. But as far as being able to activate
it...thats another story.

I did try to do a repair to the xp on the harddrive with my xp cd but it did nothing but restart the computer. I tried this twice, and it did it both times. It ran through all the start process from Cd and then when i told it to repair, It paused a second and then restarted. It went through the whole process twice. So maybe I need to do a clean sweep?? Your post is confusing. At the beginning, you seem to be saying that you just have
one hard drive. At the end, you mention two hard drives, a 120GB one and a 160GB
one.

Can you be more specific and precise about what's actually plugged into the system
in the way of hard drives, what's on the hard drives, how you have them set up (Master,
Slave, CS, which IDE cable(s), etc.)?

What EXACTLY happens when you turn the system on? Youre description is confusing.
You say it boots to ASUS boot menu, and you can alter that(?)... what does it do
EXACTLY? What message does it give you EXACTLY? That is, what are the words on
the screen? Don't summarize it. Tell us specifcally, precisely, what it's doing
and saying. Then maybe someone can provide more help.

Sorry for the confusion.
I have 2 hard drives but only installed C drive with xp as I only have one IDE port
so I needed the plug for the disc drive.

When I turn on the computer it come up to the ASUS Green BIOS screen. I can press
delete to enter the BIOS or press tab to view message for update Utility.
If I do nothing then I get the message that Xp was not shut down properly, or a power
failure and asks me how i would like to boot the sytem
1) safe mode
2) safe mode with command promt
3) sorry, forgot

or start from last known safe configuration.
( if I unknown press enter this option)

press enter and it says no hard drive found and restarts

The hard drive is from my sony system and it has 2 drives on it, C with windows XP
and just programs and photo's on it, the other part of the drive was E drive on the
sony and has a lot of our business documents on it that are very important.

Hope this helps.
Bill

It's trying to boot off your IDE drive, and is unable to. It then tries to boot
off your SATA drive, but since you don't have one, it gives you the disk not found
message.

For some reason, your IDE drive is not bootable. Will it boot in the machine it
used to be in? If so, I'd be checking the BIOS settings in your new machine.

If not (more likely), then what you should do is put a new IDE drive in your new
machine, install Windows on it, boot from it, and then attach your current XP drive
as a second drive, and pull off all the important data you need from it and copy
it somewhere safe.

If you keep trying to mess with the unbootable XP drive, you're liable to trash the
data on it that you want to save.
