1st, apologies if i'm in the wrong place for this help.
If so, pls links to where i could get this prob solved.
what's the opposite of computer geek or techie or
whatever that term is? That's ME! <-| "Preserved
spacing" as it looked *way* to garbled the other way.
let me know if that's ok. Also, did some puttering with
it after looking at the preview and saw 2ft. long lines!

so sorry for not making note of specific terms when
this happened, but i thought i was doing ok...'til....
i went into msconfig and unchecked some programs
to stop them from opening automatically and running
in the bkgrd. Don't often reboot, so when i did a few
days later, my opening window had a msg that i needed
to put it all back like before. So i ck'd the 'put it into
original ... ' button and every single thing in the System
Config. Utility, Startup window had been opened up.
NOT what i wanted at all! So i tried to remember what
ones had been ck'd b4, to no avail.

Can i somehow take pictures [thinking print screen to
Word] of the list and upload it here somehow for someone
to look at and help me ck / unck what i need to start up?
thank you all so much! lorraine

here are my computer specs, in case you need them.
Not sure what of this is needed, but...
OS Name	Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 2002
Version	5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer	Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer	Dell Computer Corporation
System Model	Dimension 8300
System Type	X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2992 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Dell Computer Corporation A05, 2/23/2004
SMBIOS Version	2.3
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
File System NTSF
Monitor:Gforce FX 5200, adapter: AGP 8X, memory 128mb, system:
processor- Intel Pentium[r] 4 with SSE2 directX version – 9.0+
Dell Optiplex Gx270, Intel[R]

Total Physical Memory 2.99GHz, 512.00 MB [2x256]
CAPACITY FOR 4GB ~ 4 slots
Options:
*Buy 2 more 256MB and fill up the slots to get 1GB.
*Buy 2 ~ 1GB $150@ [must buy 2] and fill up the slots to get 2.5GB.
{this is better because, if I want to upgrade to 4GB later,
I can just take out the 2x256 and put two more 1GB in their slots}

Another one of the worthwhile concepts to follow is GET to the POINT. Yes you can
take the picture as you call it, but posting it here is not easy to do for a Newbie,
but also really serves no purpose. MSConfig is not intended to be used as a permanent
method of removing items from startup, which is why you got the message you did,
but you could have just ignored the message are selected to automatically ignore
the message. You don't really NEED anything that is listed in the startup there,
but that doesn't mean that you don't want any of of it... there is a difference.
The whole point of MSConfig is too temporarily disable startup items. Then if you
decide all is okay, you can use the location information to make a permanent removal
of the item.

The question that I have is WHY were you even doing this? A general rule to go by
is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You could do a System Restore, if it is enabled, to before you changed whatever you did.

HOWEVER you could (maybe) lose anything you did after the restore point you select. If you decide to Restore, I would suggest that you choose to first make a Restore Point for today, so you can come back to where you are right now if necessary.

Go to Start button>Acessories>System Tools>System Restore.

why did i do it? to open up RAM [think that's what it's called] & not have programs
running in background that slow me down on the net.

why use that method to restrict programs from starting up ? i was taught to do it
that way.

Question: can you help me do what i need to do ~ stop some programs from starting
up automatically when i boot up, in the proper way?

[another person suggested sys restore. Not feasible, as i add many new things daily.]

SystemRestore makes no sense whatsoever. In general XP utilizes RAM very well freeing
up RAM does not normally improve performance noticeably. As I said before MSConfig
is only to be used as a temporary means of determining what can be removed. Once
you have identified what you want to remove, the Location column identifies where
to fix it permanently. That's done by deleting the indicated key in the registry.
However, someone with your knowledge level should never even open the registry.

Also as I said before you can use MSConfig as you did (you're just not supposed
to). Just don't panic over the message when you reboot as you did before. Check the
box that says something like just ignore what I've done. Also, it's not likely that
you will significantly improve inet performance by disabling anything in MSConfig.
You still have not provided a reasonable explanation of why your fiddling with these
things. I'd suggest that you find a knowledgeable friend to help you. It's really
pretty easy to thoroughly screw up your system when you don't know what you're doing.
If you noticed a significant change in performance then that is the symptom you should
state. If it's always run as it's running now, and you're just trying to make it
better - you won't.

msconfig is mainly used to troubleshoot problems, but there is no reason not to use it to disable the things in the startup tab especially if there is any chance you might change your mind. It is a lot easier and safer than editing the registry, and is a nice central location for enabling/disabling start up items no matter where the information is stored imo. It's pretty safe to disable anything that is on that tab, but it could cause things to work differently than they did before. If you want to see if you can improve performance by disabling start up items you can try, It's Most Likely harmless and easily reversible. The safest thing to do would be to disable any processes you find in the list from the programs that create them. If you don't want to do that if you google the processes and understand them you could be better off. The decision to leave something checked or unchecked has a lot to do with personal preference anyway. Otherwise (this isn't the safest solution) you can uncheck them all or uncheck them one by one and just see what happens. Getting a popup that says something along the lines of "you have used the system configuration utility...." is normal and it's ok to just check the box telling it not to display the message again. I don't remember how to disable visual effects in 2000, but maybe that could help too, and if you feel like doing some reading blackviper.com might have some good information for disabling unnessecary services. Just remember computers are pretty complex and anything is possible if you're experimenting and it is safest to have back ups of anything that you don't want to loose no matter what you're doing.

thanks, chameleon.
i've looked on the net 4 the ones i'm not familiar with, but the sites are techie
sites and don't give me fundamental info about what basic programs or _?_ they are
from.

so, what i see in the startup tab [some individually listed below w/ questions] are
things in these 3 locations:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows\..."
"Common Startup"
"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Could i generally just disable all the files in some of these categories and/or
should i absolutely not in others.

7 in "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows\..." Locations.
5 of which are programs i know.
2 are ones i don't know, and am suspect of stopping w/ these commands: c:WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
and C:WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe [that one looks like one i shouldn't fool w/, but
i don't know]

8 in "Common Startup" location.
i recognize all of those except a funny looking command:
"C:PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\Office\OSA9.EXE -b -l" in the Startup Item named Microsoft Office,
which of course i know, but the command looks weird.

36 in "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" Location. Recognize all but:
"c:\windows\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe" did a regedit and it is a "drive letter access
component".
There ARE 2 that are simply blank in the Startup Item and Command columns, but are
listed "in" the SOFTWARE... location.
Another [regedited] in ...Shared Tools > MSConfig > startupreg > SM1BG. named "C:\WINDOWS\SM1BG.EXE"

It doesn't matter where the startup entries are.
disabling any could cause odd behavior. For example by googling the ctfmon I find
an article that says disabling it with msconfig could cause problems with ms office,
but that UpdReg is just a program that reminds you to register a creative labs product.

The best thing to do would be to open the programs associated with the processes
and disable them from that interface.
After that you could effect stability, but though anthing is possible including crashes
or data destruction, if you know which program/hardware the process is associated
with if something happens it should be easy to just go back and reenable it.

thanks again.
would you mind giving me the step by steps to "open the programs associated with
the processes and disable them from that interface"? Do you mean actually opening
program itself, i.e. opening Word, causing a blank word doc to appear, or opening
it some other way? In either case, what would be the procedure? [I'm smart, just
uneducated in these matters ... therefore teachable]
