Has anyone figured out how to disable the Link Scanner in AVG 8 WITHOUT AVG's system
tray icon indicating there is a problem? Now THAT is an annoyance!

Thanks, but I do not find an answer to my question there.

Then post your specific question there.
You are more likely to get answers about AVG on an AVG forum than on this XP forum
- it may feel like it sometimes but this is not really an IT General Knowledge Centre !

I install AVG 8 day in and day out on customers PCs.. I've never had a problem with
link scanner.. It is an option to NOT install it, when the software is installed.
Its called the "AVG Toolbar".... I never install it. So just uninstall the AVG
Toolbar. Or reinstall the software, and uncheck the appropriate option.
I'm assuming that is what turns it off.. The only other option I don't check is the
one that says I want to report sites to Grisoft. I had one customer complain about
the link scanner when I first started to install AVG 8.0, and he was the only one
that I ever chose to install the AVG Toolbar on. So, thats gotta be it.. :)

Directing me to AVG Forums was the correct answer.
FAQ 1338 is the secret. I did exactly what it said, and voila, no more Link Scanner
at all. It does not appear in the AVG User Interface and I have a pretty multi-colored
system tray icon again, with no exclamation point!

Simple actually...just disable the startup of avgtray.exe in msconfig. Everything
will still run fine. You can still launch the user interface to configure settings,
and if you want to launch the tray icon for some reason you can do it from the AVG
menu in All Programs then right click on the icon and exit when you're done.

I don't know if you've figured this out yet, but by far the easiest way is to
disable the add-on in the browser. AVG doesn't seem to realize that you've done
that, so it doesn't complain about it. In IE it's tools - internet options - programs
- manage add-ons - and then disable the AVG one.

Thanks, but as stated in an earlier post, I found a very satisfactory solution:
"Directing me to AVG Forums was the correct answer.
