lost audio

Hi,
I recently had a friend over who connected his xbox 360 via an adapter to my pc to
use the sound as well as the lcd screen, I believe the adapter was a vga type which
he plugged into the 9mm audio plug on the back of my pc then plugged the speakers
into the adapter - I'm not entirely positive of the set-up as that I didn't watch
him do it (he says he does it at home on his own pc all the time with no problems)
in any case, after he left I went to use my pc to play some music and I get no sound,
I have checked the volume - both on the speakers as well as on the volume icon in
the startup tray, I have checked to make sure that nothing is muted and I have checked
to make sure my drivers are working properly (as well as the speakers themselves)
everything I have checked indicates that everything is working properly and that
I shouldn't be having any problems. I have also updated my drivers as a precaution
and used the "go-back" feature on my pc - the first thing I did. But I still get
no sound, well actually if I put one of the speakers right up to my ear I can very
very faintly hear some sound - I don't think that there is a problem with my speakers
as that I have hooked up some earplugs (proper word is escaping me right now) and
there is still no sound. I've researched this as much as possible on the web and
done everything that was suggested to anything that was remotely close to my problem,
but nothing has worked so far, and I haven't come across anything that was exactly
the same problem as that I seem to be having. Also, I don't have a sound card, the
plug connects directly to the motherboard. I am running windows xp on a pentium 4
- 2.4 gig. The only thing I can assume at this point is that the plug has somehow
gone bad? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance - Chris K.

Your friend probably blew out the preamp out on the motherboard. Your options now
are replacing the motherboard or better, installing a sound card into an open slot.
Your description of the connectors/adaptors is confusing so can't be sure of how
it was connected, but I would bet that the outputs are damaged. I would suggest
posting to a hardware forum as this one is for software/Windows, and/or having a
trusted shop diagnose it to see if it is hardware damage or software issues.

I thought that I might have to get a soundcard, but I figured I'd see if there was
something I was missing beforehand. Picked up a soundcard today, all is in audio
harmony again. Thanks for the help. 8^)
