XP Theme not available
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 4:12 pm Posted by xyz123

I'm autologon with my USER account.
The XP theme is not loaded. And the "Theme" service is running. When i try to manually
load the Luna theme, i get:
"The theme could not be loaded because the theme service is not running"
So i logged off, logged on as Administrator, and the XP theme
is shown properly.
Then i logged off, logged on as USER again, the XP theme
is now available in my USER account.
The Theme service seems to load properly when i first log on as
Administrator when Xp starts.
Its not loaded properly if i first log on as a USER when Xp
starts.
How do i solve this problem? Please help. Thanks!

Try another account, create a new one if you need to.

Open services.msc (start -> run -> services.msc) and find the "themes" service, edit
the properties of this service. Make sure its startup type is set to automatic,
and make sure it "logs on" as the local system account (you can uncheck interact
with desktop).
Just verify those are correct, then post back.

Thanks for the reply.
The Theme service is in its default settings: logon as local system, disable interact
with desktop.

Look in the event log for errors related to that service.. If it is failing to start
or shutting down unexpectedly you will definitely see entries in the event log under
system I believe.

Help, i'm following this thread and i'm having the same problem.
I checked my eventlog but there's no error. I've enabled logging for all success/failure
events.
I'm using AutoAdminLogon. When the windows starts i'm automatically logged on.
No xp theme.
I log off and am at the logon screen.
Still no xp theme.
I log on to that same user account again.
Xp theme is available!
Not sure why.

Use services.msc to see if the "theme" service is running. If it is, restart it.
Then see if you can apply the theme.
If it is not running, start it. Then try to apply the theme.
This is not going to fix your problem, but tell me what your results are.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes the Theme service is running.
As mentioned when i AutoAdminLogon to a user account (not an admin account) and checked
services.msc, Theme service is running, and there's no error in the eventlog.
Since its a user account i cant re-start the service unless i logon to my Admin account.
But then it defeats the purpose, 'cause what i'm trying to achieve is to have Xp
theme when i autologon with a user account (not admin account).
Also if i'm not using AutoLogon, and start windows from a previous shutdown, i'm
greeted with the Logon Screen with no Xp theme.
This is a weird problem. I'm using a clean install of xp sp2.

Wait a second, are you telling me that you have the "classic" login window, where
you have to type in a username and password, and this is what you are complaining
about?
Or, does the whole thing login (desktop and all) with a "classic" look.
Yes, you can restart the service from a regular user account..Go into control panel
-> administrative tools, and right-click the services applet and select "run as",
then run as an administrator account. You can do anything from a regular user account,
using the "runas" command or right-clicking as I stated above.

No, no. I'm not complaining of the "classic" logon screen.
I'm complaining about the logon screen and the desktop having a "classic" theme look.
This occurs UNLESS i:
Logon as an administrator, or
Logon as a user, logoff, and logon as the user again.

Not sure if this is relevant but I used to have a similar weird thing happening (not
exactly the same) until I corrected the user theme settings, via Display Properties,
then saved the theme under a new name and switched to the newly-saved theme as the
default. The problem started after a bit of jiggery-pokery with Desktop settings
in the registry so it was entirely self-inflicted - served me right in fact. Cheers.
Spexx.
You are not paranoid. They really do have it in for
you.
