SP3 nuked my themes

My PC was cracked to run 3rd party themes using "UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition)
4.0.exe.

Now that I have installed SP3, I can no longer select any themes other than Luna
(the stock ugly theme).

If i do pick any other theme the screen turns black.
I have tried recracking and reinstalling my 3rd party themes, but nothing helps.

I can not even run the windows classic theme.

I have noticed that the themes will show up on at the "Themes" tab,0 but they will
no longer show u on the "Appearance" tab.

any ideas?

If you had sought opinions here first, you would have been told to avoid it. Thankfully
we have lots of volunteer guinea pigs that must jump on these updates as soon as
they are available, and remind us all of why patience is the wisest choice.

Why thank you,
FYI: I did this SP3 install on a spare PC that sits unused in my basement. Its name
is the Guinea Pig PC.
SP3 is a windows automatic update now.

So turn off automatic updates and download (or not) at your own convenience!

Service Packs always break a few 3rd party applications, even Microsoft's. Check the manufacture of the software for any patches. It takes time, when SP2 came out it killed about 15 percent of the Windows installs.

So now you can re-install, when you do so, turn off auto-updates as most everyone
here recommends.

Yes, I did read here that people are saying to avoid it, but I would never recommend to a customer that they should turn off automatic updates, it wouldn't make any sense. Anyways, you are correct, it is a priority update now. So, instead of turning off auto updates, I have downloaded the administrator version and burned it to a CD and have begun installing it on all my customer's PCs. So far, no problems. It appears to change nothing but it does save a couple hours of downloads and updates that I always install anyways. Turning off these features is for the experienced PC user. Part of my service charge is installing all the Microsoft updates. Every now and then I have a problem with one, and I figure out how to fix it and make sure it IS installed. Point being, I don't think you did anything wrong by installing it. You are using what sounds like some pretty non-standard software, and most likely it is broken because the software was not designed properly in the first place. I'm sorry for your trouble. But this should be expected to some degree. Please post your solution when you find it.

This is not a "normal" update and in this case it does make sense at least to delay. MS themselves say that if you have SP2 and all the subsequent updates, SP3 offers you little. As it is already apparent that it brings significant risks (no surprise there) I would say wait until the guinea pigs (as Mr Rice would say) have worked through the installation problems. 6 months would be my guess at a sensible pause.

I do agree that it doesn't have much to offer. Except for me when I am constantly reinstalling operating systems and such. The problem is, that it IS a high priority update.. When you click "Check for updates" it doesn't come up as optional. You cant stop it from telling you your computer needs it. What I have noticed, is that none of my personal PCs are telling me that I have updates available yet. Just to verify what I am telling you is the truth, I went to update.microsoft.com and did an express scan for updates.. And sure enough, Service Pack 3 (High Priority). It leaves the end user with very little choice, because I don't believe any other updates will come through until you install the service pack. Just like with service pack 2, you had to install service pack 2, and then run updates again to get the remaining updates (Like 95 of them now).

Hmmm - it doesn't work that way for me, I think. I like to be in control of what gets downloaded (or, for instance, I'd have IE7 which I don't want/need) so I go to the MS Download Site regularly to see what there is that's applicable to my situation. When I refuse "high priority" downloads, and check "don't show me this again", I can still download subsequent updates and I don't get nagged for the ones I have refused (although I can re-enable them if I choose). Is SP3 going to be different, or are you just referring to to the Automatic Update process ?

I do a lot of computer work, and that is why I did install SP3 on this extra PC.
I wanted to see what to expect issue wise.
For my computers SP3 popped up the normal lil' yellow shield icon and stated that
there were updates. SP3 was the update.
This is the default Windows method and the way that my client's PCs are configured,
as it should be for these un-pc-skilled people.
I myself on my XP computer, keep automatic updates on notify, and then just check
the webpage.
I have also noticed that out of the 4 XP PCs in my home, it has only popped up on
2 of them so far.

Well what I am saying is, that there is a strong possibility that the only update you will see is SP3.. Until you download and install that update.. Kind of like how you had to build on SP2. You would have to install SP2 because it wouldn't show any other updates until you did. Any pre-reqs need to be installed first before seeing additional updates.

Just to update this thread. After messing with the windows update website more, this is what I have found.. You may have known it already. If you click 'express' scan, it will provide you with one option, you will have to install SP3. If you click 'custom', a window pops up, and Microsoft strongly recommends installing SP3. However, there will be a button that says 'Review other updates' that will allow you to bypass SP3 and still get remaining critical updates. Just thought I would post back so the information would be available in the thread.

Well thank you, steve for finally posting something useful instead of simply debating the "to update or not to update" issue. Most people come here looking for answers, not snarky commentary.
