SP3 will not install

I downloaded SP3 and the installation ran ok until I got about halfway through "Running
processes after install", when the computer froze and I got the error message "Runtime
error 203 at 5A003CDI". I have scanned the computer for 'nasties' and I have plently
of hard disc space.

David,
You may care to read through this_thread
before you decide whether or not to continue with SP3 at this time.
If your PC has SP2 and is up-to-date with subsequent fixes then SP3 has little to
offer, and you may as well let others sort out the bugs before submitting yourself
to this torture. Things will improve once there's a body of knowledge "out there"
but today I would just wait unless you have a pressing need for SP3 (and I'll bet
you don't).

Martin...I generally agree with your comments that if one is up to date with SP2
updates there should be no real rush for most users to install SP3. I think at least
some of the problems the early adopters might be having is not carefully reading
the release notes and "what to do to prepare for SP3" etc. from MS. I spent a good
part of late afternoon yesterday doing that and have updated three machines so far
today. All them installed fine and run flawlessly. MS says that some antivirus programs
and other antimalware programs (Spybots Tea Tmer as an example?) lock certain system
files and thereby cause various installtion failures. Same thing with some firewalls.
So, the thing to do is examine the various types of these apps on your computer and
disable these functions if possible, or to be really safe to uninstall them and reinstall
them after SP3. After doing this, I figured all I probably needed to do was turn
off the Resident Sheild in AVG 8.0, and since I'm behind the "hardware firewall"
of my wireless router I turned off my ZoneAlarm firewall just for the heck of it.
I did these two things ONLY on the machine I was least concerned about and all went
perfectly. I then did the next two and got the same result. I've got several more
to do, and with my experience with SP3 so far I'm not concerned at all. Just my two
cents worth...

I think we are pretty near in agreement :-)
But in truth, people will only come here AFTER they've installed SP3 since MS took
the odd step of making it a critical update - so we'll have to get used to helping
them out, if we can.
You have already contributed to the "knowledge base" thanks !

The info on SP3 is NOT getting out, though. I just happened upon it yesterday via
Windows Update, which showed it as a critical update and said nothing about doing
any preparation! My install failed ( my CPU is AMD) so THEN I started to look into
it more. Before I did the "Update," I did quickly and briefly Google SP3 and "cautions"
and "warnings" but did not see a wave of problems.....Now I know to stay away from
it for a while and to look into it first. Thanks for the info, all of you!

Well...yes and no about info getting out. When XP SP3 shows up on the update web
site, if you click on the "more info" link it will take you to other links with more
details. Also, I'm sure that if you go to microsoft.com and find SP3 there you'll
find the same cautions and information. IMHO though, MS should have made the details
about these considerations a little more plain to see by all.
