Desktop shortcuts won't 'arrange by type'

I've had this problem for ages, and I'm finally sick of it..
Whenever I select 'Arrange icons by type' on my desktop, all shortcuts end up in
two seperate groups.
'My Computer', 'Network Places', 'Recycle Bin', etc., are in the top left corner,
then starts a series of shortcuts. Halfway through the shortcut list, I get icons
for folders, jpegs, mp3's, etc.. THEN, I have the rest of my shortcut icons.
Any help appreciated.

How many icons do you have? My goodness... Are you one of those guys who's desktop
background IS a bunch of links that fill the entire screen? :)
Anyways, it sounds like maybe it is sorting the links by the type of file/folder
they are linked to. Not sure, I have never done a arrange by type on my desktop..
:) I usually drag and drop the icons into groups where I want them, but I only keep
a few. Go into C:\Documents and settings\\Desktop and switch
to a "details" view. Then, arrange by type there, and take a look at how it is arranging
them, maybe you will get a clue as to why they are arranged the way they are. Make
sure you have turned off the folder option to hide the extension of known file types
(tools -> folder options -> view).

Thanks for replying, and yes, i do occasionally let my desktop get a little crowded..
:)
Tried both suggestions to no avail, I'm afraid..
I've noticed only certain file types exhibit this behavior.
Folders, jpeg's, and .ini files have so far annoyed me.
If somebody else could try this..
(it would help if you have a lot of shortcut icons)
Drop a few empty folders on the desktop.
Rightclick desktop, select 'arrange' 'by type'..
Do all of your shortcuts group together?
Thanks,
Mark

I notice that I had a bug in my post. It should've said C:\Documents and settings\[your
profile name]\desktop
This is where your desktop files are stored.. Then I wanted you to arrange by type
in there and see how it groups the files together.. You will probably notice that
it arranges them in the same way it does on your desktop.. But, it may help you to
understand why it does what it does by seeing the complete file names.

With your help, I've figured it out.
The problem was with the 'Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop' folder. Icons
in this folder don't get sorted with icons from 'C:\Documents and Settings\[My
profile name]\Desktop' folder.
I've now moved all desktop icons from 'All Users' into my 'C:\Documents and settings\[My
profile name]\desktop' folder, and all is working nicely, all icons sorting properly.
Thanks for your help,
Mark

Great... thank you for posting back.. This is something new that I learned. Seems
how I have never done this type of arrangement on the desktop..
