Loss of everything on the desktop

I have WinXP Home with an Athlon 64 X2 and a gig of memory and plenty of HD space. when I go to MY VIDEOS folder and try to open a large video file I get a message that MSIE has to close and I am left with a blank screen except for the background graphic. The only way I have been able to get back to a normal desktop is to reboot. I was not using MSIE at the time. Any ideas? thanks, Bob

Possibly a corrupt data file is causing Explorer to crash, you could recover by bringing
up the TaskManager, and starting Explorer from there.
