"and it is fine when I have earphones plugged in"
This is not a driver problem, it's a hardware problem, and since this is a laptop,
it can't be fixed.

It's not a software issue as Ricer says. However sometimes when you unplug the headphones
on stereos or computers the little mechanism sticks. The mechanism tells the system
headphones are plugged in and plays through them. When you unplug them it stays depressed
causing this issue. Try removing headphones in a "quick jerk" 2 or 3 times.. Might
work. If not I don't know.

What about the audio mixer? Could that be the culprit?

I read that, but wondered if the inbuilt speakers were muted via the mixer.

The mixer is software. It can't selectively turn on a SINGLE output depending on
whether or not you have a plug in it. No one manufactures systems with completely
independent audio systems for speakers and earphones. There is only one, and the
jack routes the signal.
