Clone partition to USB hard drive

I split my primary C: drive into 2 partitions.
How can I copy my partition with my XP Pro on it to a external USB hard drive?
Is special software needed?

Yes, google for drive imaging software. You will not be able to use that to run XP
from though.

If I use a product like Acronis True Image to copy partition will I be able to copy
it back and restore settings from the USB drive to primary active hard drive?
Thank you for your responses.

If you prefer not to spend money, you could try the Easeus Disk Copy program, which
is freeware. Download at: http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/
This comes as an ISO file which you must image to a boot CD. It works in much the
same way as the Norton Ghost boot CD. Although Easeus runs considerably slower than
Norton Ghost, it does support USB and other external drive formats. I've used it
a couple of times and it does seem to be a solid and reliable product.
