Hi, My Brother gave me a dell dimension 2400 with linux on it. I want to install xp. I have a xp recovery disk that came with my Gateway computer. Is there any reason why it shouldn't work on this dell computer? I tried booting from the cd drive and the screen says, "checking hardware configuration...." or something like that (message is only there briefly) and then nothing happens. That same disks seems to work fine on my gateway when I tried it. I'm wondering if its not working because the xp disk is not from Dell. Thanks Brian

Er, licence agreement? Piracy is not a good thing and drives prices up.

I didnt think it was piracy to use software I purchase on more than one computer but I dont even want to get into that.

Alternatively, contact Dell support for your specific country, in order to request 
the backup disks which include the factory-installed operating system as well as 
the device drivers and utilities specific to your system.

Jazz, Thank you for that link. I filled out the form and after a couple emails back and forth with Dell support they said they will send me the windows xp recovery disks. I told them my situation, not being the original owner and wanting to remove linux from the system and they agreed to supply me with the system restore software. Thanks again, if not for the info you gave me I wouldn't have been able to use the computer. Brian
