Help! Worm or What??

Here`s the deal, I had the Sasser Worm infect my pc. Pc was shutting down, programs closing, etc. I located this Sasser worm file "avserv2.exe" and deleted it.

Here is a link to what happens and the warning window pop-up I see:
http://www.virusportal.com/com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/overview.aspx?lst=det&idvirus=46892

I`ve gone through the registry and deleted any signs of the worm but I still get the shutdowns and the warning window just as if I did on my old harddrive.I`ve ran 3 or 4 different malwares programs and 3 different virus scans, nothing shows up. Bought a new harddrive (wanted one anyway), new power supply and the pc still restarts on it`s own and cannot install any windows updates or load programs onto my pc without error codes and restarts. I`ve reloaded Windows Xp 3 times this past week.

I also used 2 other harddrives on 2 different motherboards and it`s the same results. Sounds crazy but it`s true. Any ideas?

Can a motherboard or the memory sticks be infected somehow?

You can be infected by a few different Worms by just connecting to the Internet with no Firewall.

Any storage memory can hold malware. Although it's probably unlikely that a memory
stick would. But you just asked if it could. Buying a new memory card is hardly a
solution. Get the malware off of your hard drive.

Read your post and replies. Just want to clarify..when you say "memory sticks" are
you referring to the actual RAM in your PC or a USB memory stick/pen? If you mean
a USB memory stick there could be a virus on there for sure.

You need to post on a malware removal site and let them help you clean up your computer. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as deleting one or two files and removing some registry entries any more. Some of these buggers are extremely difficult to remove and sometimes in doing so, you damage your system to the point where it not longer functions right. Not often but it does happen, so ...

Back up your data now, before doing anything else. Then follow directions at any of the following sites. The folks there are dedicated to malware removal and will be able to help you determine if your system is infected and if so how to clean it up. They require that you register but they are all free. Also be patient as they are usually very busy:

I bought a new harddrive and loaded it with Windows XP after I was having the problems. Then, the problem started all over again before I got on the internet. That`s what is so strange about it. Again, I had the worm, then did all the steps to delete the worm, got tired of dealing with it, installed a brand new harddrive, still had the same problems.

Are you using a factory OEM restore disk or are you using a slipstreamed copy? If
so, your disk may be corrupted.
