Can't get connected to the internet.

Hi all. I recently bought a computer from an acquaintance at work. It's a Dell Optiplex GX400 with Windows XP Pro. It's got a Pentium 4 processor and 512mb of RAM. I'm having trouble getting it to connect to the internet. The wires are all in right and everything. It's plugged into an Intel(R) PRO/100 S Desktop Adapter. When I click the properties, it tells me the device is working properly. I tried to update the driver but it tells me the driver is up to date. I know that's not much information, but I know a lot of you guys are awesome with computers. If you have any clue as to what I need to do, please give me a shot. Thanks for looking. Chad

Hi Chad. Open Device Manager and expand the Network Adapter section,
see if there are any yellow or red marks.

If not, open a Command Prompt and enter

ipconfig /all

Post results here please (X out real IP address if it shows).

What kind of internet service do you have, Cable or DSL?
Have you tried a different Ethernet cable?
Do you have any other computers? If so, are you using a Router?

Hi, Rich. I opened the device manager and found no yellow or red marks next to the ethernet card. I tried to run ipconfig /all but nothing happened. It looked like it went to a DOS prompt for a split second and then just went back to the normal desktop screen. I have DSL and I have this computer plugged into my router. I've plugged computers in the past into the same router with the same cable and they're all worked. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks, Chad.

You need to open a Command prompt, not run it from Start / Run. You can do this via Start / RUn and enter cmd then press Enter. Then enter ipconfig /all

Next time, check the "Check this box to preserve your spacing," below the message input area to preserve fomatting.

That's not a good response from ipconfig. Was this a business computer? Looks like it has some kind of VPN Tunneling installed, which is most likely causing your problem.

What shows as being installed in Local Area Connection Properties? There are only 4 that are needed. This is what mine looks like:

Photobucket

QOS Packet Scheduling is actually not needed but is installed by default so I leave it.

You can try deleting everything except the above and see what happens.

She had her NIC configured for the network she was connected to I would assume. Recommend
uninstalling then reinstalling you network card should clear up issue (no messing
around) I believe.

Even if doing so solves issue I would recommend a total format since you will inherit
all the issues she had (Fresh start) Assuming she gave you the XP disk.

1. uninstall the ethernet card, restart the computer, and windows will reinstall it by itself 2. or, reinstall windows, (which i think its better, since theres a lot of info on that computer and maybe its infected and God knows what else) 3. are you in NY?, If so i can help you out!
