multiple partitions on a single hard drive

Hi, I currently have 2 partitions on a single hard drive (each one is running xp).
The older partition (the one that I want to get rid of) is the primary partition,
while the newer one (the one that I want to keep) is the extended partition. Could
someone please tell me how to delete the primary partition and make the computer
recognize the extended partition as the primary partition?

Won't work. I'm guessing your 2nd partition is D:. If so, XP expects everything to
be on D: so if you were to get rid of C: and D: became C:, it wouldn't work any more.
Your only choice is to backup your data, delete both partitons, create one single
partiton, install XP and restore your data. Once you have your data backed up, you
can do the deletion and creation of partitions from the XP install CD.
If you wanted to keep C: and merge D: into C: then there are ways to do this.

If I merged the 2 partitions, which installation of xp would the computer use to
start up? Would it be the one from the primary partition or the one from the extended
partition?

It would be the C install.
Do you need a single large partition, or can you live with two? You can get rid of
windows on c and still boot from c to the d install, leaving c clean except for the
boot files.

The best answer is to not try to change anything. It will take about two days of
work if you have not done it before. You need some extra stuff to help. Like another
computer, or an external HDD. Some disk image software, like HDClone or Norton Ghost.
It is a lot of fuss.
If the objective is more storage, just go buy a new disk drive. Some retail packages
come with clone software.
Another way to do it is to use the MS backup program. Backup the whole partition.
Then restore it to a different location, the primary. Then repair the non bookable
partition with the recovery console. Like I said, lot of fuss.
